Randall Miller Obituary

Randall Dean Miller, 75, of Sugar City died Monday, Oct. 23, 2017.
The fifth of six children born to Carroll Hiram and Elizabeth Gittins Miller, Randall was born Feb. 8, 1942, in Logan, Utah. He was raised in Hyrum, Utah, and attended Lincoln Elementary and South Cache High School.
Randall attended Utah State University before serving a two and a half year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany. When he returned home, he married his sweetheart, Arlene Wright, on June 5, 1964, in the Logan Temple. He completed B.A. and M.A. degrees in English at USU in 1966 and 1967.
Randall began his teaching career in the English Department at Ricks College in 1967. He took a leave of absence in 1972-73 and with the family moved to Provo where he completed coursework for a Ph. D. He served a 10-year term as chairman of the Division of Arts and Letters at Ricks College with administrative responsibilities including the English, communications, art, music, theatre and drama departments. In January 1979, he was seriously injured when he was crushed between two vehicles. On campus he also served at various times as Chair of the Distinguished Teaching Awards Committee, member of the Standards Committee, member of the inaugural committees for Bruce C. Hafen and Joe J. Christensen, and Chair of the Thomas E. Ricks Associates Committee which awarded and supervised grants to faculty for personal development and research projects. Most of all he loved teaching and working with students.
He was devoted to his wife and children. Together they enjoyed reading, fishing, hiking, travel and gardening. Some of them took college classes from him.
He had a testimony of Jesus Christ and of the restored Gospel. He served as a temple ordinance worker, a ward and stake finance clerk, counselor to three bishops, bishop, high councilor and, most enjoyably, as a Primary and Sunday School teacher. He and Arlene served two LDS missions, first in Maine and then in Massachussetts.
Randall is survived by his wife, Alrene; six children, Heidi (Doug) Bandy, of Meridian, Idaho; Kent (MerAnda) Miller, of Idaho Falls; JoAnna (Rod) Sidwell, of Elko, Nevada; Keith (Hanalorraine) Miller, of Rockland; Laura (Rob) Pennell, of Rexburg; and Craig (Rose) Miller, of West Jordan, Utah; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Lawana; and brothers Ray and Ronald.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Sugar City 7th Ward Chapel, 6 N. Teton Ave., with Bishop Bruce King officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30-7 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Friday from 9-9:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Hyrum, Utah city cemetery Friday afternoon. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.flammfh.com.

What a wonderful good man Randall Miller was! He was the personification of quiet goodness. It was a pleasure to know him and his wonderful wife, Arlene. Arlene and family, we send you kind regards and hope you can find peace in the message of The Plan of Salvation.

Whenever I organized a study group at Ricks/BYU I thought of Randall. We read dozens of books and plays over our years together at the college. After we retired, Ralph Thompson joined us and we continued. When I moved to Utah we often corresponded and traded books. We take our friendship, our love of Christ and his Church and literature into the eternal world, where, now in my winter years, I hope to soon join him.

I have warm memories of my association with Randall clear back to grade school. We walked to each others homes to play.
Even when facing difficult health challenges, he always had a warm, genuine smile on his face.
Wonderful man and friend.

I have fond memories of this quiet gentle giant of a man counseling a faculty wanna-be. It was always a thrill through the years as he and his wife would show up unexpectedly to theatre productions I was involved with both on and off campus. Thank you Randall

I am so sorry to read about Randall. It was great having him as a friend, neighbor and classmate. I so enjoyed his visit when I moved in across the street from Wilma in Brigham City. Arlene, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
