Victor Saracini Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
Making Moments Count
As a veteran pilot for United Airlines, Victor J. Saracini placed great stock in paying attention to time. But as a father to his two daughters, the concept of time — or rather, maximizing the limited amount of it he had — took on an almost transcendent meaning.

Thank goodness, then, that Mr. Saracini, 51, a former Navy pilot, was about the most reliable person you could ever meet, and always thinking of his daughters, Kirsten, 13, and Brielle, 10, according to his in-laws, Bernard F. and Bernadette G. Hildebrand. "He taught them computers even before they could count, basically," Mrs. Hildebrand said about Mr. Saracini, who was the pilot of United Airlines Flight 175.

Once, Kirsten used her allowance money to buy a souvenir in Pennsylvania. After she paid for the item, she counted the change. Satisfied, she said, "Thank you," and picked up the package. "What kid would do that?" Mrs. Hildebrand said.

Mr. Saracini beamed, too, when his daughters did practice flight plans with him, or learned to read a compass. "He was very thorough with everything," Mr. Hildebrand said. "One time, he called to say, 'You won't have to worry about a thing if anything ever happens to me. The girls will be taken care of.' "

In the years that passed since the tragedy of 9-11, I have fondly remembered the early mornings I had picked up Victor on the way to St. Mike's grammar school where we went for 9 years, his parents and older sister treating me like family. He loved to fish and we often fished with my dad at English Creek, and also had years of fun in school driving the Nuns crazy.
Our lives eventually went in different directions, our later years taking him to the sky and me to a city hall office in San Diego. Hopefully at some point in the future having both passed through St. Peters' gate, we will meet up again and share a few more laughs together...

Dear Saracini family, I did not have the privilege of meeting Victor yet I feel as if I knew him because of the wonderful stories told by my beloved friend Vince DeGaetano... I know he cherished his memories of Victor... and was proud that he was a godfather to the girls. Vince passed away from congestive heart failure about 15 years ago, and I miss him to this day. I´m sure that he and Victor are getting up to all sorts of mischief in heaven... I just wanted to say hi, and tell you that Victor and Vincent will never be forgotten

I thought a lot about Victor on his birthday last month, I remembered how we handled it while he served with me in the Navy and how when I was teaching him how to fly. We had a lot of good times together. I remember shortly after he found Ellen, and how he brought her to visit me at JFK airport, I could tell she was the one to tame him and he loved her. We visted several times and I recall the first born and the pride both had. All I can say to Ellen is I pray for Victor to be in Heaven and that he watches over his family. Fred Catchpole

I would not have graduated from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (aka 'New Mexico Tech') without Victor's encouragement. Like Victor was in the 70's, I was an older student and having a tough time. It's a really small, really demanding engineering university. No sports. Just work. I was ready to drop out. I was wearing a New Mexico Tech hat and on a United flight back to the DC area, and Victor, standing by the cockpit thanking passengers as they disembarked, stopped me. I was one of the last to get off as always. Victor said "hey, are you a Tech grad?!?" (we are a small, close bunch). I said "No! And I don't think I'll ever be!" He asked what was going on and shared his similarly difficult times there, and told me to hang on, keep my head down, and pull through it. I don't know how he had the time, but it seemed like 30 minutes. It was probably 10, but the talk was legendary in my mind, and I remembered it during tough times and I did pull through, graduating with a Chemical Engineering degree (and some others, including a Bachelor of General Studies like Victor. It's a Tech thing...). It helped that I always wanted to be a pilot and admire and respect the heck out of them. I don't know if family will read this but Kirsten and Brielle, your father was a darn good man. Ellen, so sorry for your loss. I'm now 52, just a year older than when he passed. So dang young.

To Ellen and children: I was a student at New Mexico Tech when Vic was there in the 1970s. We were pursuing different programs and Vic was a year behind me. What a fine individual he was. Last year, I contributed to NMT's memorial scholarship fund in Vic's name, but, I didn't realize until just today that Vic was flying United Flight 175 that was hijacked on 9-11. On that day, I was in India on a business trip and only had access to Indian television to learn of the attacks therefore did not hear the names of the flight crew on Flight 175. After 9 -11, it took me two more weeks to get back to America and I landed in Vic's original home state of New Jersey at Newark International. May God rest his soul.

Dear Ellen,

You do not know me but Victor and I were best friends while I attended Atlantic Community Junior College. It seems that we were always hanging out. I visited his house in Atlantic City and he mine in Lynwood. I remember him being one of the funniest and kindness people I ever met. Lots of stories about his antics.
I wore glasses and he wanted us to join the Air Force in the "Aviation Guaranteed" program. He would be a pilot and I would be a navigator. I often wonder how that would have changed my/our lives. We lost touch after Junior College but I still have very fond memories of him and miss him to this day. I was lucky to have known him.

It was a sad day for all when I was in Middle School. I know yes I was young but when the whole school and I were seeing everything on TV it took a little of my heart with the buildings. That day I ran the best mile that I have ever ran with no thoughts on how well I was doing but all the people and their families that were affected. Even now with my husband that went overseas who I know today is affected by this day and every year to come. I want to send out a prayer to all the fallen, their families, and friends. God Bless America!

I was 9 on September 11th 2001. It took my quite some time to fully understand the gravity of that fateful day. Recently I have spent quite a bit of time reflecting on that day, watching old news clips, photos interviews etc, and ironically I came in contact with this young man's mother through my job. It was a chilling discovery when I learned that the mother of the captain who's plane was hijacked and crashed into the south tower was a resident at the nursing home I occupy. I've spent quite a bit of time with her and believe her to be an amazing person. She has told me many fine things about her son and she has also opened up with me about the horror that beautiful day in September caused her and her family. Rest in Piece Victor, you will never be forgotten

I flew with Vic back in the late 90"s as a brand new first officer on the 767. I have recounted a story to friends and family many times that I would like to share.
Vic and I were departing LAX headed back to NY when just as the aircraft left the runway the was a loud noise and huge rush of air. The cockpit window on my side had opened up on takeoff! Vic took the controls and yelled (because it was like a tornado in the cockpit) for me to secure the window. After much struggling I finally got the window closed as Vic calmly flew the jet. I remember how quiet it got when the window finally closed and looking at Vic who I thought would be FURIOUS with this doopey co-pilot who didn't make sure the window was secure. But Vic just looked at me with a huge smile and said "Man!!! You look like you just wrestled a tiger!" HA! What a guy!
Miss you buddy!
