Norman George Bell

Norman Bell Obituary

BELL, NORMAN GEORGE July 3, 1950 to June 3, 2009 Norman Bell went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2009. Norman was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife Virginia, his two sons, Norman Jr., and Matthew Bell, his daughter-in-law Holley, his two young grandchildren Ethan and Christian, extended family, and many dear friends. Norman was a native San Diegan, born and raised in El Cajon where he attended Grossmont High School, and graduated from SDSU, (which was then named Cal State University San Diego). Norman married the love of his life Virginia in March of 1972 and started a family in Lemon Grove where he lived for 37 years. Norman retained close connections to childhood friends he grew up with and because of his love for people, he had many fond friendships throughout his life. Norman was a member of UFCW for 35 years. He served as an officer, Secretary Treasurer, and then President of Local 135. His tenacity and devotion to the cause of the members of Local 135 was prevalent in the wages and benefits that he negotiated for over 14,000 members that he represented. Under his tenure, the members of Local 135 received wages and benefits that are unmatched even compared to today's current contracts. A lover of British history, Norman made many memorable visits to England and Europe with family and friends. He had a great fondness for British military memorabilia as well as historical books and model trains. He shared his joys in life in many ways such as building an extensive Thomas the Tank engine play set for his grandchildren. Norman's love of life and his devotion to his family and friends were evident in every aspect of his life. He will be sorely missed. There will be a Viewing on Thursday, June 11th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Featheringill Mortuary, 6322 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, June 12th, at St. Paul Methodist Church in Coronado, 700 D Avenue, Coronado, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to TACA ( www.talkaboutcuringautism. com) or ACIRFA (A-KER-FA) www.abikes.org.

Dear Virginia, Norm Jr., and Matt,
I feel Blessed for having you as neighbors for over 30 years. I always admired Norm's love of his family and love of The Lord.
Norm was the epitome of a good neighbor, always willing to lend a hand or offer "words of wisdom". And he loved to banter about the Padres.
I will truly miss Norm for a long time to come. I continue to pray for your strength and peace.
God Bless your whole family.
~ Love, Marie

Virginia and family:

I truly wish I could be there with you today. But, distance and family circumstances made that impossible.

I have expressed to you my high regard for Norm. I doubt I will ever have a better friend or know a finer family than yours.

I will miss Norm terribly. But, I have such wonderful memories accumulated over more than 50 years. Disease took Norm away from us; but, nothing can erase the impact he had on the lives of so many people.

To Virginia and Family: Our families were so sad to read about the passing of Norm. We have known him since 1970,when he started working as a fry-cook at Foster Freeze on Navajo Road in San Carlos. He worked there with my cousin, John Meacham, back when I was a sophomore in high school. Nothing seemed to bother him and he always had a smile on his face. My husband remembers when Norm use to work at S.D. Glass & Paint, too. We are sorry to say that we have not seen Norm for a couple of years, but I know I will see his smiling face again someday in Heaven. Our deepest sympathy to all of your family. The Schoen Family and The Crouch Family.

Norman was a special classmate at Grossmont high and San Diego State. He was always courteous and friendly. He took all stressful situations very calmly. It was a pleasure and a blessing to have associated with such a fine example of a CHRISTian human being. I look forward to seeing him in heaven some day.

I went to Grossmont Highl School with Norm (class of 1968), and always thought he was a sweet and friendly guy. He will be missed but not forgotten. I have always looked for him at our class reunions. I have posted his obituary on our class website, I hope that people from our class will pay their respects. I have also forwarded the info to our reunion organizer Jerry Heard and hopefully he will forward it to the rest of the class. My deepest sympathy to Virginia and his family.
