When Thomas Wallsmith came home for two weeks in September, he finally got to ride the Harley-Davidson motorcycle that he had bought and had pined for while in Iraq.
"I got to see a picture of his motorcycle," his mother, Patricia Vento, recalled. "I sent him a message: 'I like your scooter.' He got a big laugh out of that."
Wallsmith, 38, of Carthage, Mo., was killed Oct. 26 by an explosion near his vehicle in Rustamiyah. He was assigned to Fort Stewart.
He graduated from high school in 1985 and he worked a couple of years at the IGA grocery store in Carthage. He went into the Army in January of 1987.
Cathy Dease, who served with Wallsmith at Fort Bliss, said he has "never forgotten how he would make me laugh, even when I thought things were bad. He always tried to see the good side in any situation, making him a great mentor and an awesome friend."
Wallsmith is survived by his wife, Brenda; daughter Lauren, 13; and son Nathan, 11.
"You couldn't help but like him. He was a good soldier, and he was a good person," said Vento. "I will miss him forever." |
