Duty often kept Air Force Capt. Eric B. Das away from his wife, but he always stayed in touch. "We couldn''t go a day without talking," said his wife, 1st Lt. Nikki Das, who also was deployed to the Persian Gulf. "He called me all the time, and e-mailed and wrote." Das, 30, of Amarillo, Texas, and based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, was piloting an F-15E Strike Eagle when his plane went down April 7. "He was doing what he loved that night and flying with people he really loved, too," Nikki Das said. Das was born in the Netherlands, where his family was serving as missionaries, but grew up in Texas. He graduated in 1995 from the Air Force Academy with a degree in civil engineering. Friends and family say Das'' strong faith was an inspiration for them. "He was the greatest Christian guy I knew," said Doug Jesko. "He was the type of person who made you believe that you could be a better man." In a family statement, Das''parents, Bruce and Rosie Das, said: "Eric is a son that exemplified what faith in Christ, honor and duty and a life of excellence meant. His strong faith was an inspiration to our family, friends and his fellow servicemen, and to all who knew him."

I'm sending my condolences to the family of Eric B. Das,sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in Gods word. Micah 4:3,4

My precious brother, Eric, I miss you as much today as the day you went down. Though it has been over a decade, in many ways it seems just a short time ago we were climbing mountains together, and you were adding the adventure and humor to our family. The hole you left actually has grown bigger with each year as I wonder what our nieces and nephews from you would be like playing with my girls. Or when I can't remember a detail of our childhood, and I want to call you because your mind...

I am forever grateful to Capt. Eric B. Das who paid the ultimate sacrifice, so that we remain free. I also wish to thank the family of Captain Das, who sacrificed much, in so many ways . My heart-felt condolences and gratitude for sharing this true American hero with us.

Captain Das and family:

I was in the Air Force from August 28 1996 to June 27, 2002. The last 2 years of my service were at Seymour Johnson AFB where I worked as a Physical Therapy Assistant in the clinic there. I was struck with a deep feeling in my stomach a while back as I was scrolling though the webpages of Honor the Fallen and Fallen Heroes to see your photo and realize we knew each other. You were one of my patients.

I remember seeing you in the clinic,...

I was fortunate to have been a good friend of Eric during pilot training at Laughlin AFB. We were in the same pilot training class and he lived right above me in the housing complex. I think of Eric often. Especially today. Eric was truly a remarkable man. Humble, sincere, and selfless are just a few of his many strong traits. I was lucky to have known him and blessed to have him as a friend. When I talk to my daughters about what real friendship is I simply describe Eric. I then...

Sadly missed, but never forgotten. May he be sitting at the right hand of the Lord.

To the family and friends of Capt. Eric B. Das:
