Friends and family remember Christopher Cash as a natural leader who always tried to help others, qualities that his commanding officer confirmed. Cash was killed as he shouted from his vehicle for his men to take cover. "I''m going to miss that big smile," Lt. Col. David Barnhill said. "But if there''s one thing that can be good today, it''s that as long as America has men like Chris Cash ... then this country is going to remain strong." Cash, 36, of Winterville, N.C., was an infantry officer and company commander in the North Carolina National Guard. He was killed June 24 when his vehicle came under attack. Cash enlisted in 1987 but returned to college on the GI Bill and received a master''s degree in exercise physiology from East Carolina University. Cash is survived by his wife, Dawn, and two sons, Mathew, 11, and Christopher, 13, from a previous marriage.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Christopher S. Cash US Army Captain.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible...

Thinking of your family this past week. I served with Chris during OIFII in an adjacent task force. While traveling in Maine this past week I came across an ad for the annual memorial race and realized that he was a Maine native. I am disappointed that I learned of it after the fact but will not miss next year. My regards to you and your family. Respectfully LTC Jeff Bacon

Thank you for your kind note and blessings upon my son, Christopher. I thank you for your service to our nation. May god Bless you. from, Nancy Lee Kelley Christopher's mom in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

Chris, I am humbled by your service and sacrifice. I was stationed in Tikrit and traveled the same roads you did through Baqubah and Balad Ruz. We had our own dangerous encounters there. Thank you for taking the round for all of us. You are a true hero. I have to travel to the Cash Armed Forces Reserve Center in Winterville, NC and will be thinking of you. I never knew you... that is a shame!
