Ken W. Leisten Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Kim Strahan's 18-year search for her son ended when she saw his face on the television screen. While watching the morning news, Strahan learned that Ken Leisten Jr. died July 28 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Taji, Iraq. There was no doubt that the Oregon National Guardsman was her 20-year-old son. "At first, I was like, 'No,'" said Strahan, whose son moved away with his father at age 2. "My second thought was, 'Now I know where he is.'" A few hundred people gathered in Portland to remember Leisten, of Cornelius, Ore., as a tough, quiet and kind man who was easily embarrassed by his father's hugs and kisses. He was stationed in Corvallis, Ore. Leisten planned to attend college after his return and become a software mogul. Sgt. 1st Class Phillip V. Jacques, who was also wounded in the attack, recalled Leisten sharing his water with Iraqi children in the 125-degree heat. "His face is embedded in those children's minds," said Jacques. "That's how all these guys are. They ask for so little and they give so much." Leisten is also survived by his father, Ken Leisten Sr., and stepmother, Lisa LaBlanc.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Spc Leisten. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Spc Leisten knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Spc Leisten!

In Memory of Ken ~ (Debra Estep)

July 28, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ken, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

WE REMEMBER, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!
Family and friends of Ken...
Today, July 28th, 2007 IS A SPECIAL DAY! Though years later tears still flow, hearts still well up with groans of grief, and your soldier buddies still weep - WE ARE THERE FOR YOU! Each year on this date our soldier sons, your buddies, remember you. They have dates welded in their minds, hearts and emotions that they cannot and don't want to forget. You are in their thoughts, the families, the relatives and Ken's friends. You are in their prayers!
As parents of just one of those soldiers ("Tiny Stiny") we go through a bit of this grief with them, and with you, Ken's family. We know, however, that time heals somewhat. We must allow time to heal, and focus on a new day. A day where the sun shines and the birds are still at play. We must go on and reflect on the good, the beautiful things life has for each of us.. For life is a gift, and love is a gift, even memories are a gift from God that not even death can take away! Three years ago we carefully picked out a special plant in memory of Ken. It sits in a special place we set up for family and friends to have pictures taken. It is marked with two permament flags. During the summer months there is a card with Ken's name. We respect and love you, we honor your son's ultimate sacrifice for our country, for us. We hold each of you and Ken's buddies near and pray God's peace floods your souls on this remembrance date of July 28th. We bless each of you with God's true strength, love, and joy. We know you are proud of Ken, and we honor him today with you.
Think on these things..Phil. 4:1,6-8. Psalms 46:1 He is our refuge and strength. Psalms 32 HE is our hope! Love to you all, Ron and Kathy Steinmann, parents of two soldiers. Washington USA

Thank you for your willingness to defend the United States of America and all that we hold sacred. Though tears can never bring you back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that you made and our sorrow at your passing. You are truly a hero and your sacrifice will never be forgotten. Your mission on earth is complete. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the heroes who have passed before.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

If you need anything, please feel free to contact me!!!

Thank God for Ken and all the other brave men and women in uniform willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Our debt of gratitude knows no limit.

March 11, 2005

My wife Kathy and I were at the Hillsboro 9/11 memorial. It was very tough because Ken Leistens name was there and it could have just as easily been our son Spl. Joel Steinmann of the same unit. Our understanding is that our sons mission and Ken Leistens were switched that morning, both were in the same position on there patrols. In honor of Kens ultimate sacrifice for his country and that of the Iraqi people, we bought a memorial plant and plaque in his honor. This is planted by our sons bench in the yard. Our deepest and sincere regards to his father, mother and relatives. May God, who is the true peacegiver, grant you His peace in the tragedy of this great loss. Our hearts and tears are with you, each one. Know this that his sacrifice was not in vain...because of his sacrifice and thousands of men and women like him who defend our great country millions are, and will experience freedom around the world. He, like so many others has given his life that others might live...you should be very proud of him...he is an American hero, and he is an Iraqi hero too! Everytime I look into those Iraqi kids eyes I know we did the right thing. My two boys both joined the Army Guard at age 17. Both were in Iraq at the same time, one is still there today, we understand what you have had to endure, we pray for your peace and joy to return as days and years heal, and we hope this little note helps in that process. God Bless! Ron and Kathy Stienmann, Vancouver, Washington USA
