Jacob C. Palmatier was interested in everything. That's why he began searching for a career path early.
"When he was younger, maybe 3 or 4, his idea was that he'd just seen this Bible story in Sunday school, and he wanted to be a shepherd," said his father, David Palmatier.
As a child, he read all the volumes of a set of encyclopedias his parents bought him. He taught himself how to play the guitar, the flute, the clarinet and the saxophone.
"He always did things the way he wanted to do them," the elder Palmatier said
Palmatier, 29, of Springfield, Ill., died Feb. 24 when a bomb detonated near his vehicle in Muqdadiyah. He was stationed at Fort Benning.
His parents thought he'd become a writer. "He wrote lots of different stories, usually funny. He had a quirky sense of humor that came out in his writing. He was the sort who loved Monty Python," his father said.
Palmatier graduated magna cum laude from Illinois College in Jacksonville with a major in English and a minor in history. When he was 26 he joined the Army.
He is survived by his wife, Bridget. |
