Raymond J. Holzhauer came back to his high school after boot camp to talk to his former career center classmates about the experience.
"How he had changed in those few months," said James Fraher, his maternal grandfather. Dwight School Superintendent Dale Adams described Holzhauer as "very quiet, very respectful."
Holzhauer, 19, of Dwight, Ill., was found dead March 15 in an armory, where he worked. He was a 2005 high school graduate and was assigned to Camp Lejeune.
"He had the prettiest blue eyes ever," said his grandmother, Shirley Holzhauer. "He was a quiet, respectful, very well-liked and he loved being a Marine and was proud of it."
Football coach Erik Black had Holzhauer in his gym class. "He was a fun-loving kid," Black said. "He had a passion for things. He was into his cars."
He also is survived by his parents, Lori and Raymond.
"He was a great young man, a fine grandson, and he was very proud to be a Marine and to serve our country," Fraher noted. "He was a race car fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt Jr., and he loved hunting and fishing."
