Urban Feero Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2008.

WINTERPORT - On June 15, 2008, Lt. Col. Urban "Al" Feero, U.S. Air Force, retired, died. He was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Hampden. He was the son of Urban and Ethel Feero. He graduated from Hampden Academy in 1941. During the summer of 1941, he played one season of Minor League baseball. In 1942 Al enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served in the Pacific Theater for more than two years during World War II and participated in the Mariannas, Palau, Philippines and Ryukus campaigns. In 1949 he graduated from Ohio State University. While attending Ohio State University, Al married Nancy Ann Stackhouse in 1948. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training program at Ohio State University. He began a teaching career at Pemetic High School, Southwest Harbor, in 1949, but was called to active duty in the Air Force in December 1950, during the Korean War. In 1952, Al was granted a regular Air Force commission and served a career as an intelligence officer. As part of his work, he was awarded the master parachutists badge and made more than 300 military parachute jumps. During his career he was cited by four foreign governments for his intelligence work. He retired from active duty as a lieutenant colonel in September 1970 and returned to teaching. Al taught at Garland Street Junior High, Bangor, until 1982. From 1983 to 1989, he taught at Allagash High School and retired from teaching in 1989. His warmest memories of teaching were the seventh graders he taught at Garland Street Junior High and all the young people from Allagash High School. He was married to Nancy Stackhouse until her death in 1993. They had four children, Wendy and her husband, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Bob Teasdale, retired, of Navarre, Fla., U.S. Army Col. Lance Feero, retired, and his wife, Margaret, of New Bern, N.C., Eric, who predeceased him and Kurt Feero of Portland. In 1995 he married Marion Greaves of Woppinger Falls, N.Y.; and is also survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Donna and Mike Allen of Winterport, Laura and Randy Thornton of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Diana and Jack Ledger of Hampden. Services will be private. Al wished donations be made to Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America, New England Chapter, 280 Hillside Ave., Needham, MA 02494.

The news of Al's passing is a great sorrow to all of us who served with him. Forty years ago I served with Al in Munich, Germany. He was like an older brother to me. Al represented the best values and beliefs of his generation -- honesty, integrity and dedication to excellence. He was a highly respected and effective team leader. He demanded nothing of others that he was not prepared to give at least in equal measure himself. Al had great love for his country and family. His well-balanced Maine humor enlivened every occasion. He will be long remembered for his steadfast service to his country.

We were very saddened to hear of Al's passing. Although we were only able to hook up a handful of times, on each visit he was (without fail) jovial, animated, engaging, gregarious--always interested in what we and our kids had been up to. The last couple of years he had to be physically hurting but he'd never let you know it! His zest for life was such a benefit to Aunt Marion, and touched us and many others as well. We will always remember him as a shining example of aging with dignity.

I had just recently met Al when he called me to mow his lawn. My Dad, Lonnie, had worked on Al's house years ago, so it was neat to get to know him. Al had amazing stories of his life and willingly gave me a tour of that 'big brown house' across from the Post Office. Please accept my family's condolences.

Al was wonderful, intelligent, generous and the kindest of men. He was the greatest of dads to my partner, Kurt and I was very honored to be considered family by him.

My thoughts and prayers are with his children, Kurt, Lance, Wendy and his Grandchildren...Also with his wife Marion and her children. Thank you so much Donna, for helping Kurt and I speak with Al Saturday...It meant everything to us.

He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Feero is one of the best teachers I ever had! I was one of the first girls he ever had in "woodshop." Fond memories of him and the classes. I have had a lifelong love of woodworking thanks to him!

Al was like a second father to me. I looked up to him, and he had a big impact on my life in the short time I was able to be around him. I will surely miss him.

My thoughts and sympathy go out to all the people who were loved by Al, his children and their families, my mother, my sisters and their families and all of his many friends and other family members. Whenever I would visit my mother at Dirigo Pines, Al would be there sitting so quietly, yet attentive to all that went on and always attentive and supportive to my mother. He had a quirky sense of humor that I enjoyed, maybe since I have one too. He was never a "me first person", rather, a behind the scenes person, who took loving care of his previous wife, Nancy, and loving care, also, of my mother, his latest wife, Marion. I am very sad at his passing, but he was a good and decent man, who touched many lives throughout his lifetime, and I will feel his kindly presence when I go to visit my mom.
My heart goes out to all who read this,
Diana Ledger (one of Marion's daughters)

To the Feero Family: Al and I taught together at Garland Street, and I'll never forget the fun we had. Jim and I will always remember the "spy" stories, shopping for antiques, going out to dinner, and Al and Nancy's wonderful friendship with my mother, a Navy wife. Our thoughts are with you all.
