Gordon Sloan Obituary

Wilsonville, OR -- Gordon Wright Sloan died August 23, 2006 in Wilsonville, Oregon. He was 95. Judge Sloan was born in Hoxie on April 9, 1911 to Judge Edward R. and Julie Wright Sloan. He moved with his family to Holton shortly after his birth. He attended the Holton public schools, graduating from high school in 1929. He graduated from KU in 1933, where he was president of his senior class. He graduated from Washburn Law School in 1935, and afterward served as an Assistant District Attorney in Topeka. In 1938 he married Geneve Tipton of Wichita, and they moved to Astoria, Oregon. Judge Sloan had a long and distinguished career in Oregon, culminating in his appointment to the Oregon Supreme Court in 1958, and later as Senior Judge of the State of Oregon. He served on numerous state commissions, was active in many civic organizations, and was appointed by President Harry Truman to serve on the International Tuna Commission. Judge Sloan was preceded in death by his wife Geneve, his parents and his sister Clarice Sloan Belden. He is survived by his brother Eldon of Topeka, his son Bill and wife Bitsy in Wisconsin, and his daughter Sally, her husband Jerry Nelson, and their 2 children and 3 grandchildren in Texas.
