Stephen Worth Obituary

Stephen Christopher Worth

NORTHFIELD, MA - Stephen Christopher Worth, 72, of Northfield, MA, passed away at home on March 25, 2024, following complications of septicemia.

Christopher was born in Seattle, WA on August 7, 1951. The family moved, first to Kansas, then Connecticut, Delaware and finally Chelmsford, MA, where he graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1966. He ran track, competing in hurdles, high jump, and cross country. He attended the University of Massachusetts where he ran track and occasionally went to class.

His great passions were his guitar and his motorcycle. In his younger years, Christopher toured the world with his guitar and motorcycle, bringing his big bass voice to California, Hawaii, Copenhagen, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Japan. He made friends wherever he went, including Charles Roche of Kyoto, Japan and Annie Trouve, his first wife.

Christopher settled briefly in Massachusetts where he met his wife Diane at a bar in Harvard Square, where she was serving Christopher. When she correctly answered his crossword question, he said she was smart and wondered if she'd have his children. Two years later, they married, in 1987. Benjamin Tucker Worth was born in 1989, and the small family moved to Kyoto, Japan in 1991. Christopher, at 6' 8" was "big in Japan" for more than one reason, and enjoyed sharing his music with all generations of Japanese people and visiting tourists from around the world. He frequently brought folks home to stay with his family, and made dear friends. He was named a "Neighborhood Treasure" and was featured in guide books to Kyoto. He taught many young people to play guitar and shared his music with children at Kyoto International School as well. He was loved by many, and some of his happiest days were spent in Maruyama Park in Kyoto playing and singing.

In 2000, the family returned to the US and settled in a little house by a creek. His second child, Eirnin (EJ) Worth was born in 2000. Christopher continued to make music at local venues and wrote and performed a Solar System Science show for young children at many schools in MA. The show featured his original songs "Birthday to Birthday" and "Gravity" among others. He continued to climb Mount Washington into his late 60s as he had from his youth.

In his later years he developed an interest in making knives, which he continually gave away to friends and acquaintances. He became a local knife and tool sharpener as well, often asking people to donate to the Northfield Food Pantry in lieu of payment.

Christopher leaves behind his loving wife, Diane (Kazar) of Northfield, his children Benjamin and Eirnin (EJ), his sisters Kathy Worth and Keilah Worth, brothers Kim Worth and Aaron Worth, his brother-in-law John Kazar III, mother-in-law Janet Kazar, step-mother Judith Frediani, his nephews John Henry Kazar and Jesse Speleos and his niece Cassie Barnes. He is predeceased by his parents, Jean Spearow and Steven Worth, his brother-in-law William Kazar and father-in-law John Kazar Jr.

A celebration of life will be held on August 10, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the Riverview Pavilion in Northfield, MA. Please dress comfortably and bring your memories and instruments.

Chris and I hung out together with a few other jocks in high school. We were teammates on several track and x-country squads, including the 1968 winter track team shown here. As you can see, he was smack in the middle of everything, beaming that mischievous and infectious grin. He was, and continued to be, a real joy to be around. As mentioned above, he went on to earn his living by playing music on the streets of France, Spain, Denmark and Japan, among lots of other places, and I followed his adventures with wide-eyed amazement. We spoke on a video call just a few months ago... but I always assumed we would have many more conversations in the future. Damn. Safe travels, my old friend.

Christopher and I had six wonderful years together. He taught me freedom. In those years, every day was new and every morning was uncertain - an exciting and welcome new experience for me. We went across country four times, once on Wilhem, the German motorcycle, for a round trip from Washington DC to LA, San Francisco, Seattle, all the way up to Banff and Jasper, and then back on the Trans-Canadian Highway. We were camping and I remember some soggy times in our tent and, one night, a bear´s visit. I had never been close to even dreaming of such an experience. We were in our twenties and nothing was really considered insurmountable.

We didn´t agree on everything, of course, but I never doubted that I could count on him. His kindness and generosity will stay with me always.

We had difficult moments when we separated but later became good friends again. Very good friends. We both found a partner closer to our needs. It was a pleasure to get to know his (newer) wife Diane. They visited us in California. I visited them in their home in Japan.

I will never forget his love of good (and bad) jokes. He could even make a bad joke funny. He loved electronic toys and waxing poetic on politics. A friend once told me he´d never seen a couple like us who could have an argument over a subject we both agreed on. And he deeply loved his family and friends.

Though we wound up on different sides of the country, we still kept in touch. Never often enough, it seemed. But he remained in my life and always will be.

"Chris has read everything and remembers it all." I don´t recall who said those words, but they stuck with me. I've often repeated them to others, adding, "But he never let his smarts ruin a good conversation."

I met Chris at Kyoto International School, where his son and my son were in the same class. To say Chris taught music at the school would not be adequate. He introduced songs in a way that inspired a love of the art in the children. He had fun, and the children read his heart and felt the fun. His gatherings produced one professional opera singer who graduated from the London Conservatory of Music, at least two musicians who later graduated from the Berklee School of Music in Boston Those are the kids I know of. I'm sure there are others.

If he could, Chris would edit out my applause, but that ain´t gonna happen. Ha!
He was the friend I could talk to about anything-the friend everyone wishes for. After his passing, I most wanted to commiserate with Chris to maybe find some solace.

I miss him. And that's a good thing.

For years he brought happiness and laughs to the staff and kids at Kyoto International School. I can't listen to Ob-Ladi-oblada, Yellow Submarine, and Incy Wincy Spider, without remembering his marvelously humorous renditions when he got the whole school on their feet at the end of each assembly to dance and just go a little crazy with joy. It was so much fun. He had immeasurable talent. My deepest condolences to the Worth family.

At a loss for words.. truly. He continued to inspire an endless love for musical creativity in my oldest son. Each time we saw Chris, he always greeted us with a smile and kind words of encouragement and support. He will be truly missed, but will will do our best to keep the light of him shining through our own thoughts and actions.

I didn't know Chris that well, but knew him for a long time as a fellow Northfield musician.
I never saw him cross or out of sorts, always with an engaging smile and a friendly word.
I think of him often.
