Delois Campbell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2011.
CHICAGO (AP) — When she sang "Fly Away," Delois Barrett Campbell's voice soared to the church rafters and her joy raised the roof.

The gospel legend was the oldest of the three singing Barrett Sisters, who electrified audiences worldwide with their powerful harmonies. She died Tuesday at a Chicago hospital at age 85, daughter Mary Campbell said. Delois Campbell's health had been deteriorating and she had been hospitalized at least twice in recent months.

"I believe she was born to sing," Mary Campbell said of her mother. "Each time she sang it was as if she were performing to a cathedral full of people, no matter how small the group was."

The Barrett Sisters, raised on Chicago's South Side and coached to sing by an aunt, grew up to become what music critic Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune has called "the greatest female trio in gospel history."

The trio shared a gospel lineage with the greats. In the girls' youth, Thomas A. Dorsey, now considered the father of gospel, was stirring up change as music director of Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church, where he mixed the worldly and the sacred during the Great Depression. In high school, Campbell joined the Roberta Martin Singers, a touring gospel group that emerged from the church's youth choir.

The popular music of the Andrews Sisters also influenced the Barrett Sisters, and as young women, they practiced blending their voices on both religious and secular songs. The Barrett Sisters recorded their first album together, "Jesus Loves Me," in the mid-1960s.

New generations discovered the Barrett Sisters when they appeared in the 1982 documentary "Say Amen, Somebody."

New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael described the trio as "dramatic, physically striking women with ample figures in shiny, clinging blue gowns." She wrote that they "sing so exhilaratingly that they create a problem." Kael wanted more music, less talking, in the film.

The film opened doors for the Barrett Sisters, Mary Campbell said. "That's when they began their European travels," she said. "It gave them the publicity they couldn't afford."

The sisters appeared in Patti LaBelle's 1990 television special "Going Home to Gospel." In 2008, they received the Ambassador Bobby Jones Legend Award at the Stellar Awards, the national gospel music awards show.

Campbell's husband, the Rev. Frank Campbell, died in 2000. The couple had four children; two are deceased.

The surviving members of the Barrett Sisters, Rodessa Barrett Porter and Billie Barrett GreenBey, sang with guest vocalist Tina Brown in March 2011 to celebrate Campbell's 85th birthday at a gospel concert in a Chicago church. Campbell, her voice diminished to a whisper, watched from a chair near the altar.

In a video clip from the concert, Brown paid tribute to Campbell. "She is my personal queen of the gospel," Brown said.

Campbell said her mother was visited on Monday by singer Jennifer Hudson, who said she grew up listening to the Barrett Sisters.

"She was by her bedside," Campbell said. "It meant a lot to us."

Funeral arrangements were pending.

I played piano and organ for her church in Chicago for about 3-4 years. She and her husband were very good people. They use to invite me home w/them after church for dinner so I wouldn't have to drive home and come back for evening service. I also played with Roberta Martin at her church = she on piano and me at the organ. I'll never forget Delores, her husband, Roberta Martin, Billie and their church. May God bless Delores and Frank and I know they are somewhere around God's throne.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the well renowned Barrett family, my heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with you. I had the opporuntiy to meet Delois in Chicago in 2008 for NCGCC Convention and as several us of tried to take her picture as she was entering her vehicle, the driver asked us not to and she stopped him and said "they followed me because they want a picture to remember me". We were appreciative to her and that statement remains with me to this day. I was truly saddened upon the announcement of her death, but I am truly delighted to know that all she sang about was not in vain. Thanks for the memories.

Praise the Lord... I want to send heartfelt condolences to the families of this great lady. I first saw them on the documentary and later purchased, "Say Amen Somebody.". What beautiful ladies with beautiful voices. I have been playing the dvd again and it still makes me laugh at the scene in the kitchen with Ms. Delois and her husband. The look she gave towards the camera was priceless and it spoke volumes...such a funny and real scene. I am so glad that she and her sisters had the opportunity to travel all over the world spreading the love of God through music. I will keep you all in prayer . I can only imagine how lovely the choir in heaven has been enriched with her voice... The sincerity in her voice is pure and there is no doubt that she truly lived the life she sang about..well done...

I have just learned of Delois Barrett Cambell's death and it has brought such sadness to my heart. The Barrett Sisters are my favorite all time gospel group since the 1980's. The quality of their voices, even in senior years, surpasses what we hear today. I will never forget the impact that they made at a concert in England back in the 1980'S. Their music transcends all cultures, ages, and religious affiliations. Deloris, thanks for allowing God to use you in such a remarkable way. You may not have been appreciated totally down here but now you will fly away to receive your great reward. Heaven will be even richer with you on the choir stand and I'm sure the angels will be folding their wings as you sing HOW I GOT OVER...

it's always sad to lose a love one but to lose a mother is like losing a part of yourself. i pray that you find peace and joy with God threw this time, and know that she lives inside of you. she lived and sang the praises of God so we pray that God took his angel home. be blessed and may God keep you with a peace through this difficult time.

I saw the Barrett Sisters at Marquette Park in Gary, Indiana. They sang with such power, you knew they were touched by God. Blessings to Mrs. Delois Campbells' family as they lay her to rest. God awesomely endowed her to do a mighty work. May she rest in peace and may her family find comfort.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Campbell, when I was a child with my grandmother many years ago.She was a sweet and pleasant woman, from what I could remember had a smile that could open the heavens. My prayers are to the sisters as well as children of Mrs. Campbell. The world has lost another GREAT singer and person. The heavenly choir has just got one of our greastest....Rest in Peace!!!
