George's Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George (Noochie) Thomas Smith, Jr., who departed this life on March 13, 2025, at the age of 77. George was born on October 23, 1947, as the firstborn son to the late George Thomas Smith, Sr. and Ineva Vaughan Smith.

From an early age, George developed a deep-rooted faith, joining Holy Tabernacle Church in Gates, NC. He pursued his education at John F. Kennedy High School, laying the foundation for a strong work ethic that carried him throughout his life. He dedicated years of hard work to Golden Peanut in Suffolk, VA, before moving on to Smithfield Packing, where he retired in the early 2000s.

George was known for his sharp sense of style—or at least, he thought so—and his infectious personality. He brought joy and laughter to every gathering, always ready to enjoy good music, good company, and his favorite pastime—playing his numbers. His love for westerns, entertaining friends, and embracing life’s simple joys made him unforgettable to those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, but his legacy lives on in those who cherished him. Left to treasure his memory are his beloved children: Mark Roberts of Suffolk, VA, and Amy Roberts of Portsmouth, VA; his granddaughters: Casheem (Eric) Cominski, Danielle Bailey, and Tiffany Roberts; and his twelve great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life.

George is also survived by his siblings, who will forever hold him in their hearts: Sam (Audrey) Smith of Rochon, TX, Michael (Gloria) Smith of Ahoskie, NC, Marie Hilliard of Jackson, NC, Dorothy (Wesley) Holland of Gates, NC, and Anastasia Smith of Greenville, NC. In addition, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will always remember his love, laughter, and larger-than-life spirit.

George’s presence was a gift to all who knew him, and though he is no longer physically with us, his kindness, humor, and unwavering love will continue to shine in the hearts of his family and friends.

Rest peacefully, Noochie. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
