Jose Luis Matias Rivera Sr. “Chegui or Cano”, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Lorain, Ohio on Friday, March 21, 2025, at the age of 75, after a short illness surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born on September 15, 1949, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico; moving to Lorain in May 1980, Jose worked as a foreman at DeChants Greenhouse for 25 years and retired from Elyria Foundry after 10 years in 2011.
Jose lived his unwavering faith in God, his strong beliefs were the foundation and guiding force in everything he did. He was a faithful member of La Iglesia de Dios, Inc. in Lorain and spent most of his life serving the Church and speaking of God’s love. Jose visited the sick and offered comfort and prayers to those in need. He found great joy in the love of his family and enjoyed spending time with them. Jose also enjoyed reading the Bible and gardening. His generous spirit and kind heart left a lasting impact on everyone who was fortunate to know him.
Jose is survived by his wife of 57 years Norma (nee Santiago), daughter Marisol Matias-Ward (Kenyon), and sons Jose Jr. (Heidi), Luis (Shawndia), Enrique (Jazmin). He had 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, sisters Ana Luisa Matias of Carolina, Puerto Rico and Margarita Matias-Pomales of Wethersfield, CT.
He was preceded in death by his father Obdulio Matias Hernandez in 2009., his mother Concepcion “Mama Conchi” Rivera in 1992, aunts and uncles Reyes Matias, Benedicto Toledo, Juan Matias, Sara Matias, and Ismael Matias.
The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the staff of Mercy Hospital and New Life Hospice of Lorain for their tender and compassionate care given to him.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 27, 2025, from 4 to 7 pm at La Iglesia de Dios, Inc. 1607 East 31st Street, Lorain; celebration of life will be at 7pm. Funeral service will be on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 10:00 am. Rev. Daniel Marti, will officiate. Burial will follow at New Russia Township Cemetery, Oberlin.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to La Iglesia de Dios.
