When Joe visited us in Nova Scotia, I invited another friend, the eminent Max Jones, the inventor of community psychiatry, to join us for dinner. The conversation between the two giants was hugely amusing and entertaining, and was so enthralling that my wife forgot to put the dinner in the oven, so we ate the meal in reverse, starting with dessert.

Joe was an absolutely marvellous friend and I treasure the times we spent together. I think of him often. Ii always makes me grin remembering our regular lunches at les Beaux Jeudis, plus the huge fun we had at various conferences, and the delightful visit he paid us in Nova Scotia. My love to all the family.

As a former MBA student of his (81-82), Joe was an inspiration and mentor. My memories are of his humour and breadth of understanding of the human condition. He was certainly a role model for my future career. My condolences to the family.

Joe was a force of nature. His intensity and humor were without rivals. His love for Maureen and his family were evident every day. As a scholar and researcher, he managed to be a great teacher; qualities not often found together. Most of all, he was a delight.
My deepest sympathies to Maureen and his family.

Joe's passing is indeed a sad loss to the academic community. He was a man of considerable wit and wisdom. I will miss his erudite humor. My thoughts are with Maureen and the children.
