Kenneth Thompson Obituary
Kenneth P. Thompson, 59, of Sovocool Hill Road, Groton, died unexpectedly on August 2, 2013 at the Cayuga Medical Center. Ken was born March 22, 1954 in DeRuyter, NY, one of 13 children born to the late Albert and Mary Palmer Thompson. He grew up in DeRuyter and graduated from DeRuyter Central School. After high school, he graduated from Delhi Tech with a Associate's Degree and later graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Enviromental Engineering. Ken was employed as the Assistant Solid Waste Manager of Tompkins County for over 23 years and most recently with the Town of Dryden as Energy Coordinator. He was a faithful member of the Bible Baptist Church in Cortland where he served as Financial Secretary. Ken was also an active Rotarian, belonging to the Groton Rotary Club, currently serving as Club President. He was an avid hunter, always anxious to go out for the hunt. In the past, he served as Board Chair of the Cortland Christian Academy. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather (Bobpa). Ken is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lynn M. Brangan Thompson at home; his children, Shawne (Loralyn) of Binghamton, NY, Justin (Blythe) of Lenexa, KS, Jeffrey (Rachel) of North Glenn, CO and Kayli Thompson at home; his grandchildren, Cullen, Wyatt, Arabella, Analiese and Sadie Thompson; his siblings, William, Wayne and Dale Thompson, Joyce Tytler, Janet Coye, Alberta Trass, Viola Conklin, Elizabeth Finn, Debbie Nadge and Yvonne Thompson, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by two brothers, Richard and Jeffrey. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 7, 11:00 a.m. at the Bible Baptist Church, Cortland. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, DeRuyter. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to given to the Groton Rotary Club, 210 Elm St., Groton, NY 13073 or the Cortland Christian Academy, 15 West Rd., Cortland, NY 13045. I actually was reminiscing about Ken just the other day. I was thinking about the incredibly hot day that he and Lynn were married. I was also chuckling about his wit and sense of humor. But most of all I remember talking to him about cleaning. I am quite a stickler when it comes to the vacuum cleaner but not in comparison with Ken. When he told me about how he had to vacuum the entire room one direction and then do it in another direction also I knew I had been outdone in that department. Tom and I miss you Ken, all the times we shared and all the fun we had. May God continue to hold you in the palm of his hand til we meet again.

Tom and I have so very many fond memories of Ken. All the times we spent at various friends homes for dinner and fun. We have not seen each other in some time now but that does not diminish our feelings of friendship for Ken or Lynn. How sad to lose such a gentle man. I enjoyed working with Ken for many years. He was polite and professional. Ken's time on this earth was far to short and we will miss him.
