Anthony Senerchia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2017.
Anthony Senerchia, who inspired the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, has died from the disease at the age of 46, according to lohud.com.

Senerchia was diagnosed with the disease in 2003 shortly after marrying his high school sweetheart, Jeanette Hane.

He was an outstanding football player for Pellham Memorial High School. Earning a degree in civil engineering, he worked as a project manager for a New York City construction firm before starting his own contracting business, SCC Construction.

Senerchia started a local youth football league, and his high school gives out an award each year in his name to a player with outstanding character and leadership qualities.

After his diagnosis, he created the Anthony Senerchia Jr. ALS Charitable Foundation. The foundation funds ALS research and assists families whose loved ones have been stricken with the disease.

In 2014, Jeanette Senerchia’s cousin, Chris Kennedy, a professional golfer, challenged her to participate in the ice bucket challenge. Kennedy is thought to be one of the first to do the challenge. The challenge would become a viral sensation.

Jeanette told lohud.com, “He sent it to me as a joke and then it turned into something extraordinary.”

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raised $115 million in 2014, with $89 million funding research for a treatment and cure, according to the ALS Association.

Jeanette Senerchia said that Anthony found inspiration from his 9 year old daughter, Taya. “It’s a difficult disease and tough when you’re losing,” “Your body is failing you. But he was a fighter… He was our light. He made our life better.”

His obituary suggests donations to a fund for his daughter Taya, as Anthony was not able to purchase a life insurance policy.

You can make a donation to Taya’s fund here.

Taya; I am saddened by the news of your father's passing. He being only 46, you have life's long road ahead without him. As you grow older in the loving care of family, may your memories and the stories told of your dad bring peace, as you look to God in prayer for strength to become the adult he hoped you would be. Let God be your rock in whom you take refuge in times of distress ~Psalm 9:9.

I remember the documentary about him! So much to give and gave it his best shot! Mrs. Senerchia, you are an amazing woman and YOU define the perfect wife. You did an amazing job (coping, helping, loving, supported, etc.) and showed the world how a wife should stand by her husband, no matter what. Thank you! My DEEPEST condolences to the Senerchia family. RIP, Sir!

When I read about Anthony I see so many parallels that he has with my brother who also played high school football. Sadly, my brother was also diagnoses with ALS last November. He continues to play football 30 some years later. I hope my brother lives his life with this same conviction as Anthony. It is a disease that robs you of your body, but at the same time gives you sense of what life is truly about and what you are truly made of. Your light shines brightly always, Kim Vancouver Island BC Canada December 1, 2017

My mother Pat died of ALS complications in March, 2017. I want to send along my thoughts and prayers to your family. I would also like to say thank you to Anthony and his family for their involvement in the ice bucket challenge. The money raised during that campaign provided many daily items for her care and for so many other families fighting through the disease. I hope that the awareness and money raised over the last few years will maintain momentum and get us closer to a cure.

So sorry for the loss of this amazing man. I will keep you all in . Please know his legacy in the ALS community will live on forever. I personally lost a family member to this horrific disease. Anthony's effort pioneered the movement to give attention and financial assistance we so desperately needed. He gave hope to people that had lost it. He restored faith in the fact that researchers will continue to try and find a cure for ALS. Rest In Peace Anthony, and always know that thousands of people have had better days/ years because of you specifically. Hopefully one day the cure will be found because of you! God Bless you all... heaven certainly has gained an angel.
