Carrie Nickens Obituary

COLUMBIA - Carrie Allen McCray Nickens was born in 1913 in Lynchburg, Virginia. She died Friday, July 25, 2008. The ninth of ten children, she moved with her family to Montclair, NJ, in 1920. Carrie earned her BA from Talladega College in Talladega, Alabama, and her MSW from New York University. she was married first to Scott Young, with whom she had one son, Scotty. Her second husband was the late South Carolina journalist and civil and political rights activist, John H. McCray. Finally in November 2007, Carrie married John Nickens, whom she’d known since middle school some 80 years earlier.

During her years as a social worker, teacher and social activist, Carrie received dozens of awards and commendations including Social Worker of the Year and the United Negro College Fund’s Teacher of the Year. Though she wrote scholarly articles, short stories and poetry, Carrie started writing seriously at the age of 73.

Carrie began each morning writing around 5 a.m. She said it was her favorite time of the day, just the sunrise, bird songs and her creative mind at work. Not just a writer but an avid seeker of the truth, Carrie spent 30 years researching her family history and in 1998 those decades of work resulted in the publication of her magnificent biography of her mother “Freedom’s Child: The Life of a Confederate General’s Black Daughter.” Carrie went on a nationwide speaking tour traveling from coast to coast. In addition she continued to participate in writers’ workshops and accepted numerous invitations to speak and read her poetry. She loved teaching creative writing at Shepard’s Center of St. Andrews in Columbia.

Carrie’s final major work was a project that was also very close to her heart, the completion of her poem “Ota Benga Under My Mother’s Roof.” Ota Benga was an African pygmy who was brought to America in 1906 and displayed in the Monkey House of the Bronx Zoo. Carrie’s mother, Mary Rice Hayes Allen, was among those protesting this abominable treatment and took Ota into her home. He lived with the Allen family until his death 2 years later. Carrie was a little girl at the time but the tragedy of Ota Benga stuck with her and now lives in her provocative and poignant poem.

Carrie is survived by her husband John Nickens; sister, Rosemary Jones, son Scott Young, grandson Todd Young, great-granddaughter Amiah Young; dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends, supporters and admirers of her extraordinary work and life.

Carrie will be dearly missed by her family and friends but her beautiful words will live forever in her writings.

The family would like to thank the staffs of National Health Care of West Columbia and Hospice Care of Tri-County for their extraordinary and loving care of Carrie.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the building fund of Second Calvary Baptist Church, 1110 Mason Road, Columbia, SC 29203 or the South Carolina Writers’ Workshop, P.O. Box 7104, Columbia, SC 29202.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Second Calvary Baptist Church, 1110 Mason Road.

The family would be happy to receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

To have found a cousin so soon and then to lose her is hard. But I am so glad for the short time I knew her. Carrie was a gentlewoman who brings to my mind "Blessed are the peace makers..." All my sympathies to her loved ones.

Carrie McCray Nickens was the epitome of commitment and diligence. She worked fervently to further the mission of Talladega College and to instill the best of personhood and academic excellence among all students she encountered. She was a blessing!

Your writings were insightful and healing. Your poems and novel should be on our schools reading lists since they are not just about your own family history but about America and its racial history. I only met you once, but admire you and and your sister, Rosemary a lot. You both are heroes to me.

Aunt Carrie will truly be missed by one and all. I am so grateful to her for documenting our wonderful family history. I'd always been proud of my heritage, but having it documented for others to learn about makes me even prouder. I know my grandmother, Rosemary, will miss her dear sister and roommate, but I know she is thankful to God that they were able to share so many wonderful years together. I know I am thankful for having her in my life for so long and for being able to learn so many things from her. Rest in peace, Aunt Carrie, Anari and I miss you, but we know that you are watching over us. Loving memories...

I was so sorry to hear about Carrie. She was a wonderful person, just the absolute best. While I've not seen her in several years (much to my detriment), I shared a few meals in her home with her and her lovely, engaging sister. She was a fascinating woman, a learned soul, a terrific writer, a consummate hostess, and a kind, loving spirit. I will miss her very much, and hope that everyone's words here will provide some comfort to her family. Miss Carrie was deeply loved.

I extend my deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Nickens. I didn't know her or her family personally, but I wish I had. I've read her works and have enjoyed them very much. The story of her family was so interesting and all the members of her family came alive for me - especially her mother and grandmother. She came from strong intelligent women and carried on their legacy. Rest Sweetly Mrs. Nickens.

She was such a lovely, gracious lady. I took writing class from her. She was an excellent teacher. Her book, which I treasure about the Confederate General is brilliantly written. I am so sad that Carrie is gone.

Words cannot adequately express how much I love you, Grandma Carrie. I am truly blessed to have had you in my life and to be loved by you. Thank you for your support and love. Thank you for the time you spent telling me the stories of your life and Grandpa McCray's. Thank you for the time you spent in the library with me as I dug deep into his works with you by my side, working quietly on Oda's poem, answering questions, and guiding me through the research. You were always there for me. That was you, loving and caring for people. The love could be seen in your eyes, heard in your voice, and felt it in your spirit. This world, this life, has been sweeter just because you were in it. Sleep sweet, my precious Grandma...until we meet again in Glory.

To say that Carrie Allen McCray Nickens was the best is just an understatement. For those of us who were fortunate enough to know her, understand that whatever she did, stated or reacted to was to receive the best from her. I will miss her, and cherished the opportunity that I've been blessed to have her in my life. I normally say of a young person that passes into heavens gate that "God take all his angels, and let us stay here so that we can learn from their lives." Carrie is now, an has always been an angel that the good Lord has allowed us to learn many lessons for a lifetime. God Bless you Aunt Carrie, and I know that he is smiling on you because you've given the world alot to smile about, and I'll miss you personally.

Mrs. McCray Nickens volunteered in my classroom at Harbison West Elementary for two years through Project LOVE. She shared her work with my students, but also encouraged them in their writing. Most of all, she was so kind, gracious, and inspirational to me. My last memory of Mrs. McCray Nickens was when she introduced me to one of her sisters a few years ago after returning from an Alaskan cruise. She shared some of the highlights of the trip and encouraged me to experience the same. I'm sure that Mrs. McCray Nickens will be missed by all that were blessed to have met her. My prayers are with her family.
