William Wilson Obituary

COLUMBIA - William Bancroft Mellor Wilson, 24, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Columbia, after being struck while riding his bicycle on Devine Street. Wilson, a 2007 Citadel graduate, worked at Wilson Kibler, a local commercial real estate firm.

He is survived by his parents, Maura and Jeremy Wilson, brothers, B. Graham, Joseph W., J. Mason and Edward S. Wilson, all living in the Columbia area except Graham who lives in Atlanta. He is also survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Springer of Rochester, N.Y., and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Wilson was an eleven letter cross country/track participant at The Citadel and majored in business administration. He was a 2003 graduate of Cardinal Newman School, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish. During his senior year at Cardinal Newman he was undefeated and state champion in cross country. His love for running continued after college graduation, and he was training to run in the Kiawah Island Marathon. He had a great work ethic, often working with his brothers, or for his friend, Sam Clarke, or with his friend, Zack Hudson.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held noon Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Devine St. with visitation to follow. The family respectfully requests that flowers be omitted. Those who wish may send memorials to the William Wilson Memorial Scholarship Fund, The Citadel, Att. Jody Hudddleston, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston., SC 29409. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Steve and I were so shocked and saddened to hear the news of your son. Many have said the loss of a child, no matter how old, is the toughest tragedy anyone could ever face. May God's grace give you and your family the strength to weather such a senseless loss. You are in our thoughts & prayers.

Dear Jeremy and Maura

How quickly life changes. Just two months ago we talked with you about your upcoming trip, how proud you are of all your boys.
While we haven't seen much of them in recent years, we will never forget the Wlison Brigade - building forts in the alders, policing the shore ar Bear Cove. In general Making their Mark.
You have encountered more than your share of tragedy -- there are no words to express our shock and sorrow at this latest.
Until we see you on your next trip North - our hearts ache for you.

Dearest Wilson Family,
My brother Davis was a knob last year at The Citadel and William was so kind as to give him some encouraging words before he went. He truly was a great role model not just for my brother, I'm sure, but for many other young gentlemen. My heart breaks for your family and I know that William's legacy will surely live on. Trust in the Lord to bring you solace during this terrible time.

I didn't know William as well as I would have liked, but it seems that we all remember the same person. I remember that he was a quiet guy, but one whose presence was strong, kind, and true. It's hard to imagine that this tragedy is something that was in God's plan, but I'm certain that William is in a better place. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Wilson Family,
Although William was quiet most of the time, he had the ability to captivate all around him with his telling eyes. The summer he spent in Bluffton, he was like a super hero running around town and winning local races. We grew close that summer, and I will never forget the wonderful times we past swimming to the sandbar, running trails on Fripp, and whatever else he suggested...because he wasn't going to sit around. Incidents like this can make you wonder about how this universe works. William only wanted to be better at everything he did, and he was never one to give up on what he wanted. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Wilson family,
I work at Palmetto State Bank with Monty Laffitte. For years I had heard of all the Wilson boys and finally got to meet one - William - the summer he worked at the bank. What a wonderful young man! He was such a pleasure to have around and of course he got plenty of attention from the young ladies! I am so, so sorry for your loss. May your memories bring you some comfort knowing someday you'll see him again. You all are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dearest Wilson Family,
My brother, Blaine Babb, and Wilson lived together in Charleston one summer. I know they were friends long before that, but it was during that summer that I had the opportunity to go spend a weekend with them. Wilson was such a sweet spirit. He had few words but always a smile...it brightened a room easily. I know during their East Coast Camping trip recently, Blaine would call and tell me about their adventures...one involving almost hitting a moose. He and Wilson were dying laughing while he told me what happened. He was a wonderful friend to my brother and I know Blaine will always cherish the times they spent together. He will always be remembered and loved and so he will live on in the hearts of his friends and family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

William actually helped with some yard work for the past three months. I ran into him on Harden street while he was helping out with a friend's rental property by doing some maint work as a favor. I asked him for a bid on yard work, having NO clue what he did full-time for Wilson-Kibler until after I corresponded with him via email. I never met a young man who so quickly demonstrated himself to be unassuming, honest, diligent and reliable. He showed up when he said he would (even in the rain) and represented himself as the model of a Southern gentleman. As I have read about William on the Wilson-Kibler website in additions to all of the comments here. my heart goes out to all those people who will not have a chance to meet this incredibly impressive young man. He obviously touched the lives of so many people and there are not enough words to describe the loss. It is especially tragic when someone so young is taken in such an untimely fashion.

I wanted to leave a passage by Plato, but it seems appropriate given his athletic accomplishments. I see him running and flying to the next world, to God.

"The soul takes flight to the world that is invisible, and there arriving, is sure of bliss and forever dwells in paradise."

My thoughts are with his family and friends. God be with you all.

To his family,
I cant find the words to say to express my grief. I can't think of a more wonderful person than William. I knew him since fifth grade. He was so kind to everyone. When we talked on the phone it was always more of a one way conversation, but he would say a word here and there in his soft voice. I saw him after Cardinal Newman on and off and he was still quite, sweet, cute little William. I wish I had spent more time with him. I know he will be truely missed. He was a walking angel in this world and I know he is still with us all. I am so sorry for your family and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Wilson Family,
It was less than a month ago that my daughter called to tell me she would see William for a birthday drink in Boston. Madeline's birthday is August 13th and of course, William was 24 on the 15th. Mad and William met during knob year for athletic cadre and knew one another throughout their time at the Citadel. They stayed in touch after graduation as well. Madeline finished college a year early and when she had just moved to New England for law school she was feeling lonely on her birthday; she got an email from William wishing her a happy day. William played a large role in my daughter's life and when she moves beyond the devastating loss of his time among us all, I know she will make a lasting tribute to William's memory. Please accept our deepest sympathy on the loss of your beautiful child, brother, friend...I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to meet your son and I know he will save you all a place in heaven while each of you and all of those he left behind will carry him in our hearts.

Dear Wilson Family,

How we remember the days when Graham and Taylor played baseball at the Carolina Children's Home and your boys were always there running under the bleetchers playing and having fun and cheering for their big brother. Boy were they dirty! Oh, to have those days back again! But, thank goodness we had them! We are all so saddened by the loss of your fine, young man and son, William. His life sounds so full and so much like he was ready to start at this new stage and leap forward to touch so many people. My thoughts are with your entire family so deeply. You know that we will be there for you in any possible way as we have walked in the shoes that you do not want to wear. God's Grace will help keep you going then I will be there for you in any way possible. We are so sorry.

My heart goes out to the Wilson family on this great loss. I had the privilege of being William’s first cross country coach at Cardinal Newman High School. I wasn’t much of a coach, but he was one great athlete. He was so graceful, light on his feet and a competitor at all distances. He won most of his races, but contributed much more. He was very quiet, never bragged, boasted or put himself above his teammates, or competitors for that matter. In his silence he taught us so much. He will be missed.

William was a terrific, valiant, and altruistic individual . I know he was a great friend who felt like a brother to many. I was lucky enough to meet him through friends like Paige Van Sant, Zack Hudson, Mollye Chamblee, and Katie Carruth. All of his friends, including myself, admired how ambitious he was, and the individual he was becoming. 'Life is just a chance to grow a soul' in which William did, a miraculous one, and in which no one will ever forget. My thoughts, prayers, and love...

I met Will when he ran cross country with my boyfriend, Brendan Kight, at the Citadel, but he wouldn't talk to me in person for an entire year after I met him. He would send me messages on the computer, but was way too shy to ever speak to me. It always made me laugh whenever I would try to talk to him in person and he would not say much more than one or two word sentences, but when it came to talking to me on the computer he had many things to say. Our conversations were never the normal type you would have with most people, but more about very random and unusual things. We finally made a break through after a year, and were able to have some very special and funny conversations, in person. Will's desire for adventure and natural athletic talent always amazed me. I once watched him quickly climb a huge thirty foot tree and swing on a rope down into the water below very gracefully. When I tried, I could not even climb the tree without his help, and did a very ungraceful belly flop into the water below. Will was a very special and unique person and will be greatly missed. I have and always will appreciate the leader, mentor, and friend he was to Brendan, and will always remember those funny and wonderful conversations and memories I had with him. I know he is in a much better place now, and I look forward to the day I will be able to see him again and have many more of those great conversations.

To the Wilson Family,

William was such a good friend and I very much enjoyed seeing him on my roadtrips down to Charleston while he was at The Citadel. I am also greatful for the time that I recently had with William when he and friends drove up the East Coast and stopped in New York City. We surprised William with cupcakes for his 24th birthday which he especially enjoyed. This is such a tragic loss which I know has devestated the community. My thoughts and prayers will continue for your family. May God comfort you at this time. William will be greatly missed.

Maura and Jeremy:

I am Blaine Babb's mother. We met at a couple of Parent Weekends at the Citadel. We always enjoyed our times around William and teased him about his quiet manner. I first met William the summer that he and Blaine shared an apartment in Charleston. I cooked shrimp and grits for quite a crowd and William didn't have much to say, but he sure had a big appetite and a dazzling smile! He was a great friend to Blaine. I know that Blaine already misses him. We so enjoyed hearing the reports of their road trip to Maine last month! I am very grateful for having William in our lives and for the influence and memories that he leaves with us. I have prayed for your family since Blaine first called after the accident. I will continue to pray for God's peace and comfort for you in the days ahead.

With love,
