Robin Martin Obituary

September 15, 1938 - October 30,2024

After a year's-long battle with cancer Robin passed away on October 30, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Fran. He is also survived by his brother Dennis and sister Linda, his son Dan and daughter Joanne and step children Jay and Leigh plus grandchildren and nephews and nieces.

Robin began his professional life at Douglas Aircraft repairing computers. He went on to join IBM doing the same type of work and eventually became the Systems Engineer Manager.

He retired after 25 years with IBM. Soon after he sold his home in Hermosa Beach and bought a boat and a vacant lot in Big Bear. For the next two years he and Fran spent all their time upgrading the boat and building their retirement home in Big Bear.

On New Year's Day, 1995, they set sail from San Diego to the Caribbean Islands, passing through the Panama Canal. For the next 3 1/2 years they sailed the high seas, only coming back to Big Bear during hurricane season.

Robin began volunteering at the Big Bear Discovery Center in 1999. It was here he began another 25 year career. He became a Certified California Naturalist. He was an expert leading discussions on our famous Bald Eagles and leading hikes along many of the trails in Big Bear.. Robin was an inspiration to all and a true friend to so many. He may be missed but he will always be a part of us who knew him so well.

Robin joined the Discovery Center the same year I did. He was an enthusastic and devoted volunteer. Truly and inspiration, and a wonderful man.
