I met Robert in Yellowknife waiting in line for a hamburger. He kept turning around to look at my T-shirt and I recognized him from his film " Into The Great Solitude". We had dinner together, talked about solo travelling and then he and his partner at the time drove my friend and I back to our campsite. I like him instantly. What a loss. I am sad. My condolences to his family and all his friends.

Robbie was a friend from my boyhood. We went to grade school together; we played six man football; rode bikes around town; explored the woods that surrounded his home;camped on an island offshore our coastal town; listened to new music like Dylan.
He learned the skills of canoeing at Keewayden where he took weeks long trips in the remote Labrador. Ultimately, he found his comfort zone on solo journeys with his trusty wanagan and plastic pink flamingo on the remote rivers of the Canadian Arctic and subarctic. And he wrote about his trips with thoughts of family, friends, and life. In 1992 when I was living in Maine I took the opportunity to attend his presentation at LL Bean about one of his many solo canoe ventures. In recent years he had moved to a ranch on the Virgin River in southern Utah. He invited me to attend a zoom presentation on his vision to combine his artwork with his new found home there. He offered his ranch as a B&B retreat for visitors seeking a fuller experience of the land.
His life was one with the land and the water.
My heart goes out to his sisters Eve, Beau, Florrie, and brother Tommy.

I am so sorry to hear of Rob's passing. He was a beautiful friend. I have known him since 1973 in Cork, Ireland. We spent many happy times together in Boston in the late 70s.
We met regularly in recent years in London, the last time in January. He was as ever full of plans and generosity. We talked of his book, of 'Already Broken', of Claire, and of our mutual friendship with Seamus Heaney.
Several of his wonderful paintings are on our walls here.
My sincere condolences to family at this sad time.

A dream, turned into a desire. Turned into the journey that satisfied, and turned into a dream.
