Henry Bangser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 14, 2024.
Dr. Henry ("Hank") Stephen Bangser passed away on March 12, 2024. He is survived by his beloved wife Sara and their three children, Jill Fioravanti (Marc), Marc (Gina), and Matt (Abby) and their seven grandchildren ages 4 to 15 (Albert, Simon, Camilla, Jackson, Penelope, Elyse, and Margo). Sara, Jill, Marc, and Matt, their spouses and their children will always remember the vibrance and warmth of "Grandpa Hank" and strive to exemplify his character and values.

Hank grew up in Westchester County, NY and graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1966. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Williams College in 1970, a Master of Arts in teaching from Northwestern University in 1971 and a PhD in educational leadership and administration from Northwestern University in 1977. His educational career began at New Trier East High School in Winnetka, IL and spanned nearly five decades, including classroom teaching, educational leadership positions, and superintendencies in six public school districts across New York, Illinois, and California. Perhaps most noteworthy were his more than 20 years spent with New Trier High School District 203, where he worked first as a social studies teacher and assistant principal, and then returned to serve for 16 years as superintendent. Hank was inducted into the Mamaroneck High School Hall of Fame in 1999, and upon his retirement from New Trier in 2006, the administration building at the Northfield Campus was renamed the Henry S. Bangser Administration Building.

Hank's legacy touched thousands of teachers, administrators, staff, and students. One current superintendent said: "Hank was the single most important influence in my professional career, and there's no way I would be where I am now without his guidance and support. The world just lost an incredible man." A longtime former assistant for Hank added, "My heart is broken right now. Hank was just such an unbelievable person to me, professionally and personally - he will never know just how many people he has impacted along the way."

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Hank reveled in playing, discussing and watching sports. He played varsity football and baseball in high school, collegiate football at Williams College and coached New Trier football. For his entire adult life he was an avid golfer who carried a single-digit handicap, using his exceptional short game and silky-smooth putting stroke to tame some of the most challenging courses from coast to coast.

Hank and Sara celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April 2023, surrounded by family in a wonderful celebration of their milestone. He was immensely proud of his children and beamed whenever he talked about his grandchildren, and he went out of his way to attend soccer games, dance recitals, and band and orchestra concerts, and loved every video and picture sent his way. "Grandpa Hank" fit him perfectly.

Hank will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune to know him throughout his almost 75 years, and his family knows that the many memories shared with Hank will resonate for years and generations to come.

A graveside service will take place on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Ridge Lawn Cemetery, 5736 N Pulaski Rd, Chicago, IL 60646.

Sara and Family - I´m sending along my deepest sympathies on Hank´s passing. I had the honor and privilege of working with him when I facilitated a two year strategic planning process at New Trier several decades ago. Hank was an extraordinary leader comfortable in his own skin and clear about his mission of service to the students, staff, and community of New Trier. I enjoyed one of the most powerful, collaborative, and impactful partnerships in working with Hank and his team during those years. As noted, he influenced the lives of tens of thousands of students, staff, and community members. One of my prized artifacts from our relationship during those years is a photo that captures me passing the proverbial baton to Hank as we moved from planning to implementation in the process. Hank´s invitation to facilitate the strategic planning process for New Trier remains a high point of my professional career. I will celebrate his life in the fond memories of knowing and working with him. Al

Sara, Matt, and family... I´m so deeply sorry to hear this. I was just this week talking to a family member about the enormous respect I have for the way Hank lead New Trier seeking and listening to all staff points of view before making a decision that impacted us all. I saw this repeatedly when I was Art Department Chair. Hank was so personable and warm, knew all staff´s (hundreds of) names, and something about everybody. Although we couldn´t talk sports as many others did, , we had a very nice connection when I taught Matt in Photography. Hank often sought understanding of the discipline and of Matt´s conceptual work. I was very touched. Hank created the best kind of leadership experience have ever known and I´m so fortunate that I knew him. Love and Peace to you all.

Just learned of Hank's passing and I wanted to extend my thoughts and prayers. We worked together in the Ojai Unified School District (California) where he was the superintendent and I was a teacher and coach at the high school (Nordhoff). He was always so professional, helpful, and supportive towards everyone while at the same time being a loyal and caring friend.

Sara and Family,
I extend my condolences to you all. I had the pleasure of working with Hank when he served as a lead mentor at Ventura County Office of Education in our new administrator program. Hank became a mentor of mine and ardent supporter most recently writing an eloquent letter of recommendation for me for a position last year. Hank was always supporting others and lifting them up, encouraging leaders to seek higher positions. I am forever indebted to him for his guidance and unwavering support. Hank always grinned from ear to ear when talking about his grandchildren. He is already sorely missed, and his legacy lives on in all of us who have been rewarded by knowing him.

Sara and family. I had the opportunity to work with Hank at the Ventura County Office of Education in California as lead mentors in the administration preparation program. Hank was the bedrock leader of the program and an inspiration to all of us and the new leaders he mentored. His dedication to developing strong leaders was remarkable and matched by his kind and friendly manner. My deepest condolences to you and Hank's entire family.

Sara, Jill, Marc, Matt and Grandchildren: I knew Hank for thirty-six years; a relationship that started on a golf course, grew on a golf course and ended on a golf course(the last time we played and spoke was February 17th in Naples, Florida). He was a man of intention, commitment and integrity; the words defined him on the golf course but more than anywhere else they defined him as a husband, father and grandfather. After finishing our round and before dinner he lovingly laid out pictures of each of you and described where each of you were in your respective lives; his biggest smiles were for his grandchildren and his greatest compliments were for his life partner- Sara. He was in so many ways larger than life; the void cannot be filled but the manner in which he touched us all will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. Love Dave and Kathryn Galainena

Sara, I am so very sorry. I worked with Hank when we were superintendents in the North shore and thought the world of him. When we both became superintendents in California we also kept in touch. He loved talking about you and your children and I even got to meet his wonderful sister when I was in Kenya. He was always kind and encouraging and I so enjoyed his sense of humor. I cherish those memories.
