George William Obituary
George William
April 15, 1935 - June 15, 2025
George William Carter, 90, of Bassett, Virginia, completed his earthly journey and entered his heavenly home on June 15, 2025. Born on April 15, 1935, George was the beloved son of the late Charlie T. and Lilly (Bryant) Carter.
A devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and servant of Christ, George leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, humility, and love. Just a week before his passing, he and his cherished wife, Ruby Foley Carter, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary - a testament to their enduring love and shared faith.
George was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis Lee Carter; his sons, Bruce L. Carter and Thomas W. Carter; daughter-in-law, Brinda Crowder Carter; great-grandsons, Andrew Marshall Mabry, Thomas Lynwood Mabry, and River Lynwood Carter. Though his heart knew the weight of loss, he carried each burden with grace, anchored always in his faith in Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his devoted sister, Eunice Vaughn; daughter-in-law, Lynda Crowder Carter; son, George Dean Carter, and daughter-in-law, Angie Barnhill Carter. His grandchildren brought him immense pride and joy: Helen Carter Shupe (Christopher), Annette Carter Mabry (Jed), Will Carter (Paige), Aaron Carter; and step-granddaughter Heather Crigger Glenn (William). He was a proud great-grandfather to Tabbetha Marie Shupe, Evelynn Grace Mabry, Nathaniel Jude Bruce Mabry, Easton Alexander Carter, Oakland Beau Carter, Azalea Anne Carter; and step great-grandchildren Nellie Kay Mize and JJ Mize.
Before his retirement at 30 years of service, George worked as a Draftsman for the City of Martinsville Public Works Department Engineering Division, where his diligence and attention to detail left a lasting mark on the community. However, it was in his service to the Lord that George's legacy shines brightest.
As a dedicated member of Fort Trial Baptist Church, George was known for being God's hands and feet. He served for many years as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and on various committees such as being a historian along with his wife. His ministry as a deacon was marked by quiet acts of compassion - visiting the sick, helping patients shave and feel cared for in their most vulnerable moments, and covering them in heartfelt prayer. He never sought recognition, only opportunities to serve as Christ served. Not being a tall man in stature, but in spirit, he would even stand in the bed of his truck to change the church sign hoping the words chosen would plant seeds as people drove by.
He also made it a point to speak life into those he loved. George would often pull his children and grandchildren aside to speak blessings over them, reminding them how proud he was and affirming their worth in both his eyes and God's. These quiet, intentional moments left lasting imprints.
George walked in grace, spoke with wisdom, and lived in a way that pointed others toward the love of God. His Christian legacy is imprinted on the hearts of his family and all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with his son, Rev. George Dean Carter, and Pastor Joey McNeill officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Burial Park.
