Billy Bentley Obituary

Billy Bentley

November 16, 1936 - June 17, 2025

Modesto, California - Billy Eugene Bentley, 88, the devoted anchor of his family, passed away on June 17th, 2025. To all who knew him, Bill radiated a happiness and kindness that left a lasting impression. His life wasn't just lived; it was a profound testament to joy, integrity, and devoted compassion. His guiding light will forever remain a treasured source of pure joy in the lives of his family.

Bill was born in Eddy, Texas, on November 16th, 1936, to James and Lela Bentley, one of seven children with three brothers and three sisters. At just 18 years old, Bill made two pivotal decisions that would shape his extraordinary life: he enlisted in the US Air Force, and he married the love of his life, Rosemary Furtado, in a chapel in Minden, Nevada.

From that day forward, they embarked on a journey that would become an unparalleled example of unconditional, constant, and enduring love. Bill and Rosemary's bond wasn't just beautiful to witness; it was the very fabric that tightly knitted their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren together through every holiday and life event. No matter where they went, it was always "Bill and Rosemary," "Dad and Mom," "Papa and Grandma"-a true reflection of their special love. On June 4th, 2025, they celebrated an awe-inspiring 70 years of marriage, a milestone few are blessed to achieve, and a powerful example for others in their family to strive for. Bill leaves behind his cherished wife, Rosemary; daughters Julie Storer (Donald) and Lisa Bettencourt (Tim); nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Debra Perry (Joe).

As an Air Force mechanic, Bill served stints in Champaign, Illinois, and San Rafael, California. While in San Rafael, they began the joyous journey of starting their family. Upon returning to Modesto, Bill embarked on a long and distinguished career as a lineman for the Modesto Irrigation District (MID), eventually rising to a management position before retiring in the mid-90s. During his years at MID, Bill was very active as a player and coach for the district's fastpitch softball teams and continued to be involved with other local fastpitch softball teams in the area.

While the first half of Bill and Rosemary's life was rich, the second half was even more special. They embraced the world, traveling to over 30 countries and creating countless special memories on numerous cruises. After Bill's retirement, they found great joy golfing at Spring Creek Country Club, where they forged many lasting friendships. Throughout all his pursuits, his steadfast integrity and ever-present smile made him someone everyone wanted to be around. He truly never knew a stranger, only a friend waiting to be made.

To his nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, he was affectionately known as 'Pop' and 'Papa.' Universally, he was the quintessential grandpa. If you were to create a grandpa character for a book or movie, modeled after him, he would instantly become the world's most adored and treasured. Bill was their greatest cheerleader and confidante, a constant, reliable presence they could always count on. From cheering every hit, touchdown, basket, and goal – including watching one of his grandchildren play in the NFL – to celebrating every graduation and significant life event, he was there, radiating pride and support, showing up for the moments that mattered most.

Bill's life was a powerful demonstration of extraordinary strength and endurance. He fought for his life to be with his beloved wife and family, beating cancer four times, enduring each battle with remarkable patience and an unbreakable fortitude. He truly set an example of perseverance and grace in the face of adversity, always maintaining his positive spirit.

He valued the gift of life. Bill was a force of pure goodness, radiating warmth and kindness. As we say goodbye, our sorrow is tempered by immense gratitude and joy for having known and loved such a truly special and blameless man. The profound impact of his boundless love, the beautiful and close-knit family forged by his marriage, and his constant, selfless presence will be remembered forever. His life will remain a timeless example of how to live with the utmost integrity, compassion, and unwavering devotion to others.

A funeral service will be held on July 10th, 2025, at Franklin and Downs Funeral Home, located at 1050 McHenry Avenue, Modesto, CA, at 10:00 am. Private burial will follow the service at Good Shepherd Cemetery, 3200 N Dakota Avenue, Modesto, CA.

Mr. Bentley was good enough to make every kid he met feel like they mattered. He and Mrs. Bentley were loving people. Debbie was beautiful, one of the nicest girls in our Modesto High class of so long ago, and she must enjoy the colors of heaven so much more having her dad holding her hand again.

Although our families have been friends for many many years, I had the pleasure of getting to know Bill better by cutting his hair every month for the last several years! He always had a smile on his face when he walked in the salon door and I was always happy to see him. He talked about his family quite a lot and was extremely proud of his kids and grandkids. He spoke a little to me about his fight against cancer and how frustrating it was. He was always positive though and happy to get a haircut. I know he always wanted to look good for Rosemary!
I will miss seeing him walk in with his polo, shorts and flip flops on and leaving me with a big hug. Heaven gained a good one. Rest in peace Bill. I hope to see you again someday.
