Charles James (Jim) Barker, Jr. (94), of Durham, NC, passed away on July 8, 2023.

He was born on October 23, 1928, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Charles James Barker and Kathryn Freeman Barker.

Jim graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, RI, and went to the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, where he received a BS degree in industrial engineering.  Throughout his early career, he worked for various companies across different states before settling in Durham, NC and working in the parachute business.  He loved his work, retiring at age 87, and was grateful for the community of people he worked with for so many years.

Jim married Marion Patricia Rackwitz in 1952, in Newport, RI.  They had 2 children (Charles James Barker, III and Diane Patricia Barker).

Outside of work, Jim had a wide range of interests. Growing up in Newport, he developed a deep love for sailing.  He loved being near the ocean and enjoyed family beach trips.  Jim played the trumpet and had fond memories of playing in a swing band during his youth. He was a lifelong learner, especially interested in chemistry and science.  He loved spending time with his family and pets, and was known for his calm, easy-going temperament and for a willingness to help everyone.

Jim is preceded in death by his father, Charles J Barker, his mother, Kathryn F Barker, and his son, Charles James Barker, III.  He will be deeply missed by his wife, Marion Patricia (Pat) Barker, his daughter, Diane B Thomas, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
