David Smith, Jr. Obituary
In Loving Memory of David Regis Smith, Jr.
October 25, 1934 – June 22, 2025
On June 22, 2025, David Regis Smith, Jr. passed peacefully, surrounded by the love and presence of his devoted family, at the age of 90. A man of unwavering faith, Dave was a beloved patriarch-a guiding light whose wisdom, humor, and steadfast love helped shape generations.
Born on October 25, 1934, Dave graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952 and remained a proud and active alumnus throughout his life, organizing reunions and fostering lasting friendships. He began his career at the University of Pittsburgh before founding Viking Printing, a business he built with dedication and pride.
Dave was a devoted husband to Anna Marie Smith, his beloved bride of 70 years. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and family. He is survived by Marie and their eight children: Debbie (Dave) Vick, Donna (Scott) Young, David (Lisa) Smith III, Darsi (Nate) Wilson, Daryl (Patty) Smith, Daren Smith, Deane Smith, and Dayna Smith; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way). Known lovingly as "Daddy," "Pappy," and "G Pap," Dave cherished every moment spent with his family-whether vacationing down the shore, cheering from the sidelines sitting front row in his wheelchair, gathering around a table full of storytelling, or relaxing in his recliner with a scotch and soda in hand.
A lifelong Pittsburgh sports enthusiast, Dave proudly supported the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins and Pitt Panthers. He and Marie traveled often, joyfully visiting their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and celebrating life's everyday blessings with them.
Dave was a gifted storyteller with a sharp wit. His memoir, Me and Jimmy Rafferty, captured not just his experiences, but the spirit of resilience and joy that defined him. At just 8 years old, Dave survived a near-fatal case of polio-an early trial that forged his strength and gratitude. From that moment forward, he lived with a deep appreciation for life's gifts, often sharing his favorite Irish reflection: "How lucky am I to have lived to see my children's children's children."
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Dorothy Smith; his sister, Barbara Kelton; his beloved granddaughter, Jaime and his great grandson Deklan.
To know Dave was to be welcomed with warmth, lifted with laughter, and blessed with the kind of wisdom only a life so fully lived could offer. His legacy is the large and ever-growing family he leaves behind-a living tribute to his love, strength, and the life he shared.
A viewing will be held at Charles W. Trenz Funeral Home on June 25th, with visitation from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place in Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Church in Verona on June 26th at 10:30 a.m.. Interment will follow at Plum Creek Cemetery

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
