Donald B. Alexander, 84, of Pleasant Gap, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. Born on July 27, 1940, in Bellefonte, he was the son of the late Joseph Blair and Florence (Estright) Alexander. On January 8, 1966, he married his wife, Barbara Gearhart (Vare) Alexander, who survives at home after sharing 59 years of marriage together.
Donald was a 1958 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School. He attended Steven's Trade School, where he also wrestled, and earned his Associate Degree in Automotive Mechanics in 1961. After school he proudly served his country in the United States Army from March 1962 until he was honorably discharged in March 1965. He was especially proud of his time working at the White House as a communication officer. After his time in the service, he worked as a Yoke Design Engineer for Penn Tran Corp for 29 years until his retirement.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by their three children, Donald W. Alexander of Centre Hall, Julie E. Alexander, and Susan E, Smith, both of Pleasant Gap; two grandchildren, Tanner Smith of Pleasant Gap, and Kiana Smith of Lock Haven, and two great grandchildren, Mila and Ella Smith, both of Pleasant Gap. Also surviving is a sister, Judy Dyke (Gary) of Julian.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Martha Shope, Janet Lose, and JoAnn Beck, and a brother, Richard Alexander.
Donald attended Fairview Church. He was a life member of the Bellefonte Elks Lodge #1094, a member of the American Legion Post #867 in Pleasant Gap, where he was also a past commander and helped to form a scholarship for Bellefonte Area High School seniors, and a member of the Undines Fire Company in Bellefonte. Staying active in his community was always important to him. Donald enjoyed the outdoors, whether he was hunting or fishing, he valued what nature had to offer. He also enjoyed sitting down to play a good game of cards. More than anything, he treasured spending time with his family.
Funeral and burial services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Donald to the Pleasant Gap American Legion Scholarship Fund, c/o American Legion Post #867, 435 S. Main Street, Pleasant Gap, PA 16823, or to the Fairview Church, 1399 Curtin Hollow Road, Howard, PA 16841.
