Fannie Thomas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2025.
Fannie Mae Wyatt Thomas, a longtime resident of Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully at the age of 94. She was a faithful member of Wyndrock Baptist Church for over forty years and often sang special music.

Born on May 28, 1931, to Thornton Wyatt, Jr. and Mina Mae Copeland Wyatt, Fannie was one of seven children and loved her siblings dearly. She was preceded in death by them, Ruby Dunlap, Susie McKnight, Charley Wyatt, Dorothy Dunlap, her twin sister Annie Fae Walls, and Betty Brumley.

At just seventeen years old, Fannie married the love of her life, Claude "Doc" Vernon Thomas. Together, they built a family rooted in resilience, faith, and hard work. Doc preceded her in death in 1989, along with their sons, Sam Houston Thomas and Claude Vernon Thomas, Jr.

Fannie began her working life in service to her country, making U.S. Navy uniforms in a garment factory at the age of 26. She spent many years in the clothing manufacturing industry before transitioning to retail, where she sold shoes and eventually found her perfect match as a greeter at Walmart. For the final 12 years of her long and steady career, Fannie welcomed customers with her warm smile and friendly spirit-proof that her true gift was connecting with people.

She was known for her dedicated work ethic, humor, and deeply social nature. Whether at work, with family, or among friends, Fannie brought joy, wisdom, and a touch of sass wherever she went.

Fannie is survived by her daughters Verna Calhoun, Belva Cleveland, and Glenda Washburn; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who carry forward her legacy of toughness, strength, and humor.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and remembered for the steadfast love and laughter she shared so freely.

Grandma was always so loving. I remember the tight hugs. She loved to chat, even if she didn´t have much to talk about. The love of God was in her heart. Family was always the most important thing to her. She will be missed, but I know she´s home now.

"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness."-Proverbs. She raised children with tough love and grandchildren with open arms. Her love was not soft and sweet-it was strong and steady. Like a good pair of work boots, it held up over time, even when life didn´t make it easy. And now she rests, because her life was full. Full of the tightest hugs and the best laughter.
