George Thomas Smith Sr., affectionately known as "Uncle Plump," "Smitty," and "Pie Cake," peacefully transitioned at his son's home in the care of loved ones on June 11, 2025. George was born on July 20, 1934 to the late Purnell Smith and Rebecca Wise Smith at home in Wachapreague, Virginia.
He was educated in the Accomack County Public School System and graduated from Mary N. Smith High School in 1951. He was later drafted to the United States Army serving from 1956 to 1958. He was a dedicated member of Grace Independence Church in Wachapreague, Virginia and served on the Trustee Board for over 40 years.
George Smith was employed with Gulf Stream Nursery, Bay Shore, and later retired from Perdue in 1997 after 27 years of service. He spent his retirement years hanging with "his boys," making countless memories with family, and sparking humorous chats with the patrons and employees at Sage Diner. George made friends everywhere he went constantly telling jokes, spreading joy, and creating laugh-ter. He had a need for speed and will be known for having the fastest car on the shore, "Brown Betty." He leaves behind his legacy of family, love, and laughter to all those that came to know and love him.
George married the love of his life, Evelyn Collins, on September 29, 1956. From this union they were blessed with 3 children, Cleo Smith Harrison (Darrell, friend), Beverly Smith, and George Thomas Smith Jr. (Lowanda, friend). George was a proud and devoted grandfather to 5 grandchildren, Courtne' Sherow (Geovani), Tonya Harrison (Kinika, friend), Alfred George Harrison, III (Torika), Taranique Bailey, and Ashley Smith (Que); 3 great-grandchildren, Kyle, Amerah, and Asai; and a host of step grandkids. He is also survived by his baby sister, Sarah Smith; brother, Calvin Smith; 3 sisters-in-law, Celestine Smith, Bessie Smith, and Olivia Collins; special friends, Levin and Karen Reid; and a host of loving and supportive nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
George was preceded in death with by his wife, Evelyn Collins Smith; parents, Purnell and Rebecca Smith; sisters, Berlie Shields, Maggie Sturgis, and Dorothy Horsey; brothers, Wallace Smith, Robert Smith, and James Smith; son-in-law, Alfred Harrison, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Josephine Floyd.
