James Everett "Scooter" Brown, 90 of Robbinsville, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Monday June 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Heflin, Ala., Scooter had called Robbinsville home for the past 52 years. He now rejoices in Heaven, reunited with the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Ruth Austin Brown.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ruby Brown; brothers, Russell Brown, Arvid Brown and Gerald Brown; and sisters, Nancy Skinner and Jean Yates.
Scooter considered his family a treasure and is lovingly remembered by "his girls" and their families, Yvette and Chip Carringer of Robbinsville, N.C., Yvonne and David Foster of Troutman, N.C., and Alicia and Rick Parham of Robbinsville, N.C.
He was a proud grandfather to Taylor Carringer and wife Mandi, Tucker Carringer and wife Shannon, Carson Foster, Carrie Foster, Brylee Trull and husband Hunter, and Baylee Parham.
Scooter's legacy continues in his four great-grandchildren: Clara Ruth Carringer, Joel Everett Carringer, Luca Jarrett Carringer and Willa May Carringer.
Also celebrating his life is his "adopted daughter" and longtime family friend, Karen Maynard; as well as a special group of friends and caregivers who brought joy and comfort during his later years: Donna George, Cyndi Postell, Pam Bowers, Brenda Burchfield, Sydney Hart, Pam Knott, Rita Eller and Dana Smith.
Scooter was a proud American and a honored veteran, having served his country in the U.S. Army. Following his service, he attended Auburn University, where he earned his degree in forestry management.
He began a distinguished 32-year career with the U.S. Forest Service, serving in Alabama and Mississippi, but found his calling as district ranger in the Nantahala National Forest in Highlands and Robbinsville, N.C.
Shortly after retiring from the U.S. Forest Service, Scooter and Ruth purchased Nationwide Insurance Agency in Robbinsville, where they faithfully served the community until 2002.
Scooter loved the Lord and was a devoted member of Robbinsville First Baptist Church. He served faithfully in the Sunday School department and on various church committees.
Whether it was fighting forest fires, maintaining the church grounds, or raising funds for the blind through the Lions Club, Scooter lived a life of service, protecting and providing for those he loved, and even for those who never knew the difference he made in their lives.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Saturday June 14, 2025, at the Townson-Smith Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. G.D. Phillips and Noah Crowe officiated. The family received friends from 2-3 p.m.
Burial followed the service at Old Mother Cemetery. Pallbearers were son-in-laws and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were the U.S. Forest Service retirees.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests the donations be made in Scooter's memory to:
