Jamie Sue (White) Kroeber passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025 to her eternal home. She was 87 years old.
Jamie was born on September 7,1937 in Carbon Hill, AL to Ada (Castleberry) White; her father James White, a coal miner, had passed away six months before her birth. Jamie was the youngest of twelve White children, four of whom - Jackie, Gilbert, Yvonne, and Jamie - were still at home during her childhood. After her high school graduation, Jamie attended the University of Alabama, earning a masters degree in Library Science.
Jamie dreamed of seeing the world; she met her future husband Donald Kroeber while serving as a US Civil Service librarian in Germany. When Don heard about the pretty young librarian who had just arrived, he made a beeline to the library (still in his US Army fatigues!) to introduce himself and ask her out. They married in Basel, Switzerland on October 10, 1961, and enjoyed 56+ years of marriage before Don passed away in February 2018.
Jamie and Don raised two sons, David Kroeber (of Cumming, GA) and Eric Kroeber (Pawleys Island SC). They have seven grandchildren (Ross, Chad, Hollin, Reed, Cole, Bryce, and Donald) and a great-granddaughter (Odessa Mazul), with two more great-grandchildren on the way.
Don and Jamie moved frequently during his 20-year Army career, living in Lawton OK, Kansas City MO, Heidelberg Germany, and Athens GA, before Don retired from the military and began his second career as a college professor and administrator at James Madison University (Harrisonburg VA) and Radford University (VA). In all these locales, Jamie worked as a school librarian, passing along her deep love of the written word to generations of elementary and middle-school children and their parents. They retired to Pawleys Island SC, then lived in Birmingham AL before finally landing at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville GA in 2015.
Jamie and Don made many new friends in this wonderful retirement environment, where she volunteered in the LVE library. They traveled extensively, visiting family and exploring the world - realizing her childhood dream!
Jamie lived a full and rewarding life, bringing joy and comfort to her family, friends, and students. She was much loved, and will be missed.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Lanier Village Estates, 4000 Village View Drive, Gainesville, GA. In lieu of flowers a memorial gift donation can be made to the Lanier Village Estates Employee Appreciation Fund (4000 Village View Dr., Gainesville, GA 30506).
