Jerry Kannel was born on May 5, 1935, in Quincy, Massachusetts. He attended Tri-State College where he met his great love, Sharon Grogg. They married in 1958, and he often joked that Sharon “smoothed out some of my rough spots, although I’m sure that in many cases she would have preferred to shoot me.” They raised two daughters, Melinda and Stephanie, and built a life grounded in learning, and laughter.
Jerry earned an undergraduate degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Tri-State, a Master’s degree in Applied Mechanics from Michigan State, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from NC State. His career began with Chrysler’s missile division, where he contributed to the aerodynamics of the Redstone Missile, a critical component in sending a man into space to orbit the Earth for the first time.
He spent more than 50 years at Battelle Memorial Institute, where he became a pioneer in the field of contact pressures in rolling contact and bearing dynamics. A recognized expert in tribology, Jerry was published over 50 times and is honored in The History of Tribology.
Outside of his professional achievements, Jerry had a passion for life. He was an avid jogger, participating in the first Columbus Marathon, a seasoned world traveler who visited 49 of the 50 U.S. states, and a fan of camping and Otterbein Theater. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his groan-worthy jokes, spontaneous songs and embellished stories. Above all, Jerry was a devoted husband, a supportive father, and an amazing grandfather.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon. He is survived by his sisters, Connie Morgan and Judy Greer; daughters, Melinda (Greg) Greenzalis and Stephanie Hendrix; his grandchildren who were his pride and joy: John (Carole) Greenzalis, David Greenzalis, Morgan (Jon) Koepf, Luke Greenzalis, Natalie Hendrix, and Greg Hendrix.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to extended family, cherished friends from Beechwold Christian, and his companion Sharon Howell for their care and support.
In lieu of flowers and for anyone who wishes, donations can be given toward the placement of a memorial bench in Jerry’s honor at the Alum Creek Marina where he loved to spend his time.
