John Earl "Butch" Payne, 79, a lifelong resident of Bloomington Indiana passed away at his residence Saturday morning, April 12, 2025 with his family by his side. He was born March 4, 1946 to Harold Payne and Hazel Basten Payne.
He attended Bloomington High School and landed his first job as a paid fireman with the Van Buren Fire Department. After his time with the fire department he worked for various vending companies and finally as a route salesman for 28+ years with Frito Lay.
Butch attended Eastview Nazarene Church, enjoyed playing cards, fishing, time with his best friend Ted Isom, and was frequently known to be a big teaser and kidder of friends and family alike. No one was immune! He was also very proud of his time he served in the United States Navy.
He leaves behind his wife Susan Kay (Spencer) Payne, children Debra A. Holden and husband Adam, and John S. Payne, grandchildren Tiffany Redlinger and husband Aaron, Garry M. Payne and wife Andrea, Conner Holden, Jacob A. Payne and fiancé Mykim Le, Adam Holden II, Allison E. Payne, Abigail W. Holden, and Austin W. Holden, as well as 10 great grandchildren.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, son Garry L. Payne, great grandson Emmett Payne and siblings Harold Payne II, and Nancy Payne.
Funeral services will be held Thursday April 17, 2025 at 1:00PM at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 South Old State Road 37. Burial will follow in the Valhalla Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday afternoon and evening April 16, 2025 from 5:00PM until 7:00PM also at the funeral home as well as on Thursday from 12:00PM Noon unit the time of the service at 1:00PM.
