Michael John Ruiz, 82, of Antioch, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2024, surrounded by family.
Michael was born on October 15, 1942 to Santiago & Carmen Ruiz in Antioch, California. While attending Antioch High School, Michael lettered twice in three sports- Football, Basketball, and Track and Field.
After Michael graduated from Antioch high school in 1961, he worked at the Columbia Steel Mill and went on to join the Army National Guard in 1964. While in the National Guard, he was deployed for the Watts Riot in 1965.
In summer of 1960, Michael met Sandra Solano at an Antioch High School dance, where not even a fierce school rivalry could keep them apart. In 1965, the high school sweethearts were married and went on to have 3 children, Michael, Andrew and Daniel, as well as unofficially adopting a 4th son, Michael. Their house was always filled with music, dancing and Love.
Shortly after his marriage, Michael began his 28-year career with PG&E. He started out as a helper in 1966 and worked his way through the ranks; Helper, Apprentice Electrician, Journeyman Electrician. In 1994 he retired from PG&E, then went to work at Chevron for the next couple of years before officially retiring at age 55. He then spent his time traveling with friends, golfing and spending time with family.
Michael was well known for his performance on the softball field, his little league coaching abilities, and his inability to resist a good pre-game and post-game tailgate. (As a 49er season ticket holder, there were many tailgates to be had with family and friends). His athletic abilities did not stop with sports. He was also well known for his moves on the dance floor. Michael and Sandra had an appearance on a show called Dance Party, where they were able to show viewers their moves.
Michael is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sandra, his 4 sons and their families; Michael (Crystal) (Jennifer), Andrew, Daniel (Heather), and Michael, his 6 grandchildren; Adriana, Michaela, Cameron, Daniel Jr, Aron, and Ayden, his 3 great-grandchildren; Naomi, Mila & Makaio, Sister; Bebe, Brother; Frank, as well as countless cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren.
To know Michael, was to know his smile, his sense of humor, his ability to take charge of any situation, and most of all his competitiveness. He was well respected and loved throughout his family, friends and community, and his passing will be deeply mourned by all who knew him. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
A memorial mass will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, 2200 E. 18th St., Antioch, on January 31, 2025 at 11:00 am.
