Richard E. Taylor (1954 – 2025)
Richard E. Taylor, 71, passed away on March 18 due to a traumatic brain injury. Born in Raleigh, NC, to Rudy and Marjorie Taylor, he was welcomed by his older sister, Donna. At age 12, his family relocated to Winter Park, FL, where he completed high school before attending the University of Florida and joining the ATO fraternity. He graduated with a degree in building construction and became a lifelong Gator fan. It was also at UF where he met Glenda DeGrove, who would become his wife of 47 years. The two married in 1978 in Winter Park and later moved to Vero Beach, FL, in 1980, where they built a life together.
A dedicated contractor, designer, and custom home builder, Ric was known for his meticulous attention to detail and passion for craftsmanship. His work left a lasting mark on Indian River County, including the remodeling of the historic Driftwood Inn, the construction of the five-story Spindrift Condominium, and countless custom beachside residences, including the home he designed for his own family. He served as Vice President of The Hill Group for 15 years before founding and leading Taylor & Company Builders for two decades. In his later years, he took great pride in helping design and build a custom home for his son Eric's family, and was an invaluable source of insight for his son Rex's unique houseboat project. He poured his heart and soul into all his work.
Beyond his career, Ric was a man of deep passions and strong connections. He found joy in diving and fishing in the Florida Keys, cheering on his beloved Florida Gators, and taking his grandchildren boating on the Indian River. His stories, although long winded, were filled with humor and heart, and were as unforgettable as the man himself.
Ric is survived by his loving wife, Glenda, his sons Rex and Eric, his daughter-in-law, Kaitlin, and his cherished grandchildren, Henry and Emmie. He was a beloved Uncle Ric to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, and a dear brother-in-law to those who were lucky enough to call him family. His warmth, wit, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5th, at 2 PM, at The Community Church of Vero Beach, with a reception to follow in the Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ric's memory may be made to The Community Church of Vero Beach.
