Major Robert W. Ballard (USAF Ret.) Bethalto, Illinois
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Major Robert W. "Bob" Ballard, who entered into eternal rest on June 4, 2025, peacefully at home, at the age of 70. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Bob lived a life defined by service, love, and unwavering dedication to his country, family, and community.
Born in Wood River, Illinois, Bob was the beloved son of Lloyd A. Ballard and Patricia A. Ballard, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Alton Senior High School before pursuing higher education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.
Bob began his career as an educator, dedicating nine years to teaching before answering the call to serve his nation. He joined the United States Air Force, where he served honorably until his retirement in 2006. Throughout his distinguished military career, Major Ballard played a vital role in several operations, including Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Desert Fox, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Just Cause. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his commitment to national security by working with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) for 15 years, retiring in 2021.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bob was a Master Mason for 41 years and a proud member of Franklin Lodge No. 25 A.F. & A.M. His passions included baseball, basketball, volleyball, reading, spending time outdoors, attending Masonic and church events, and cheering for his beloved Chicago Cubs.
Bob leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Patricia L. Ballard, and his cherished children: Brent Panyik (Kacey), Michael Sheffield (Katie), Suzanne Stock (Mike), and Thomas Ballard. He was a proud grandfather to Tyler Tharp, Trevor Panyik, Nick Sheffield, Kendall Panyik, Aubrey Sheffield, and Jacob Stock, and a great-grandfather to Liam Tharp. His memory will also be treasured by his brothers, Geno Ballard (Debbie) and Richard Ballard (Nancy), along with his four nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on June 12, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 PM at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, Illinois, followed by a funeral/memorial service at 7:00 PM Burial will take place on June 13, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Jefferson Barracks, officiated by Robert Smith.
