Robert "Howard" Johnson
Robert "Howard" Johnson, 78, of Erie, passed away Monday June 23, 2025. He was born in Dubois, PA on September 27, 1946 a son of the late Robert W. and Nellie Ann McLaughlin Johnson.
Howard graduated from Brockway Area High School. He served two tours as a helicopter door gunner in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Air Medal after completing 93 missions. He worked at GE from 1969 until his retirement in 2002 and was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, where he ran the Scrip Program. He was a former chairperson for the Erie Peace Initiative, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous (sobriety date February 17, 1989), and a life member of the First Marine Air Wing Association and the HMM-165 Helicopter Unit. Howard was a skilled carpenter having built his own home in 1996 and enjoyed traveling, heckling his grandchildren, and fighting about politics on Facebook.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Kathleen Stanton Johnson; two sons, Matthew Stanton-Johnson (Diane) of LeBoeuf Twp. and David Robert Johnson of Erie; four grandchildren, Justin, Matthew, Alexis, and Isabella; two sisters, Margaret Corbin of Erie and Willa Johnson of Murraysville, PA; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and are invited to a Funeral Mass at All Saints Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery.
