Shirley J. Satterwhite Smith Harris of San Marcos, TX, passed away on March 1, 2025 at the age of 89. She was born on June 24, 1935 in San Marcos, TX, to Elmer and Emilie Satterwhite.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Gladys Lyon and Jo Ann Childress, her husband, Gene Smith, and her husband, Robert "Bob" Harris.
She is survived by her children, Rodney Smith and wife Mona, Janet Jones and husband Brad. She is also survived by her brother, Terry Satterwhite; Bob's children, Tamara Pittman Keithley and husband Steve, Tom Pittman and wife Rhonda; grandchildren Elizabeth Martin and husband Tyler, Christopher Smith and husband Chris, Garrett Jones, Robbie Keithley and wife Rachel, Regan Keithley, Luke Pittman, and Libby Pittman; Great Grandchildren Emma Martin, Grant Martin, Aubrey Jones, Samuel Keithley, Joanna Keithley, and Oliver Pittman. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews that she considered her children.
Shirley grew up in San Marcos and graduated from San Marcos High School in 1953. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College where she met Gene Smith, whom she married in January of 1956. Gene was in the Army and they were soon stationed in Vicenza, Italy, where Shirley worked as the Secretary to the Superintendent of U.S. Army Schools. After Gene's discharge from the service, she became a coach's wife and mother, and spent time in Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Ganado, and San Marcos, where they settled permanently. Shirley returned to SWT and earned her degree in education. She taught for 21 years in the San Marcos public schools before retiring in 1988.
Gene passed away in 1986 after 30 years of marriage. Shirley met Bob Harris, a few years later, and they were married in March of 1989. They were married for 31 years until his passing in 2020.
Shirley was a kind, generous, and loving wife, mother, and friend. She especially loved being a grandmother and great grandmother. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Beta Sigma Phi. She was a founding member of the Methodist Church Twice Blessed Consignment shop and she served on the Board. When she was able, she also enjoyed her weekly coffee visits with her "Walk to Emmaus" group.
Shirley spent her last four years at Sage Springs Senior Living in San Marcos, where she was cared for and loved by the staff.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 5 pm to 7 pm at Pennington Funeral Home, 323 N. Comanche St, San Marcos, Texas. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 11 am at the First United Methodist Church, 129 West Hutchinson St., San Marcos, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church Foundation Ministries.
