Thomas Douglas Miller, age 82, of Medford Lakes, NJ, born in Bayonne, NJ, died on March 15, 2025. Tom was raised by his sister Marjorie Giubardo and her husband Phillip Giubardo Sr. Tom was fortunate to marry his Livingston High School sweetheart, Joyce Carolyn Miller (formally Moorhead). Their love and marriage of 62 years thrived due to mutual admiration, respect, love of family, and an unwavering commitment to their shared priorities. Tom's passion for Joyce burned bright to the very end.
By the time Tom was 26, Joyce had birthed three boys, Brian, Kevin, and Robert (Bob). Tom & Joyce have made their daughters-in-law, Lisa, Claudia, and Christa, feel like daughters from day one.
Tom was a great husband and dad. Nothing was more important to him. He always made time for his wife and kids. He never told his family, "I'm too busy right now." Tom's boys could always count on him. He was always present. Always available. Tom knew from age 21 that being present was crucial. He knew when to kick his sons in the ass, when to give sage advice, and when to let them figure out things for themselves. His sons could not lie to him, even though they tried. Somehow, he always knew.
Tom coached all three boys in baseball and soccer for many years before high school. Tom was a good multi-sport athlete and showed his prowess as the shortstop for the often-victorious Odd Couples Float Group softball team.
Tom's greatest legacy was teaching his three boys to be great dads. They learned from the best. Tom's three sons have eight wonderful kids, Lauren, TJ, Lucas, Kyle, Mackenzie, Ryan, Sarah, and Samuel, who love their Pa Tom and Grandma Joyce beyond words. As a grandfather, Tom earned frequent Pa-points at countless events, including wrestling matches, lacrosse, field hockey, musicals, recitals, concerts, speeches, etc. Four years ago, Tom's great-grandchildren started popping out like gremlins. Six of them already: Sophia, Cooper, Eliza, Emery, Jake, and she-who-will-be-named-in-May. Lauren, TJ, and Kyle are already great parents and understand the values taught by Pa Tom and Grandma Joyce. Pa Tom and Grandma Joyce also love their grandchildren's significant others, Kyle Firth, Jordan, Monique, Sam, and Jamison.
Tom was a big brother to Phillip Giubardo Jr, Margie Centuori, and their spouses Karen Giubardo and Joseph Centuori, who had four niblings Tom loved dearly: Jackie, Phillip III, Jenny, and Dennis. Phillip Jr. and Margie were in their teens when Tom was a young father. They adored him and looked up to their mentor, brother, and dear friend. Tom and his immediate family spent many summer days in Point Pleasant with the Giubardo/Centuori clan. Tom honed his early fishing skills as a kid in Point Pleasant and lived in his first house there with Joyce and his boys. It was a special place for him.
Tom was close to his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Shelly Moorhead, their sons Scott and Brad, and now with Scott's husband, Jeff. They have two awesome kids, Zoey and Otis. Tom was a great example to Scott and Brad as well. He's no doubt playing cards and watching soccer with Brad right now.
When Tom's boys were teenagers, the Millers and Moorheads started vacationing in Sea Isle City. They started with one house, and the tradition grew to four as the family grew. Some of Tom's happiest memories were of family, cards late into the night, digging into crabs and other seafood, and fishing in Sea Isle. Everyone was welcome in Sea Isle, as there were turnstiles of friends from the Miller/Moorhead family who visited. Pa Tom and Grandma Joyce love a big tent and couldn't possibly have too many kids and friends in that tent. Little kids instantly gravitated to Pa Tom. Pa Tom and Grandma Joyce love hosting the entire Miller and Moorhead families for Christmas.
Tom had many interests, including all sports, especially the Philadelphia and Rutgers teams, any light stakes card game, literature, history, golf, cinema, and food. He was a ringer in Trivial Pursuit. He loved to cook, especially for his family. Fishing was always his number one activity. He was a favorite of the mates of the Gambler in Point Pleasant, the Miss Chris in Cape May, and the Susan Hudson in LBI. His Everglades fishing trips over 20 years with his grandson Kyle, brother Phil Jr., and nephew Phil III are legendary.
Tom believed there was no bad time for a gimlet. Vodka. Tequila. Rum. Whichever. Tom had a proper perspective on work-life balance, where his work provided for a family that never needed anything they didn't have. Fun with family and making jokes were priorities. To Tom, a joke, prank, or sarcastic remark was always appropriate. Almost nothing was off limits, and his family was frequently in his crosshairs.
Tom's smile lit up any room he was in. Ask anybody in Medford Lakes about Tom, and they'll mention his smile, positivity, and laid-back persona. He instantly made people feel joy.
Tom is most remembered for his love of family, infectious smile, sense of humor, and ability to create laughter at any moment. He recently quipped, "At our age, a friend with benefits is a woman who drives." He passed his traits down to an extensive family. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Tom's family and friends will celebrate Tom's life at a location and date to be announced soon.
