Elizabeth Allen Obituary

Elizabeth Lee Bryant Allen Greenville - Elizabeth Lee Bryant Allen, age 82, died Wednesday, May 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at 1:00pm at Christ Hope Church, 1396 East Fire Tower Road, Greenville, North Carolina, with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm with the Reverend Leonard R. Furlough, Jr., presiding.

Betsy was born on October 17, 1942, in Buckhannon, West Virginia, and spent the first ten years of her life in Waynesboro, Virginia. She moved to Greenville at the age of ten when her father was transferred to the Dupont plant in Kinston.

Betsy was a 1961 graduate of J.H. Rose High School, where she was in the National Honor Society. An English major at East Carolina College, she graduated magna cum laude in just three years. She was a college marshal and a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

Betsy began her career as an English teacher at Southern High School in Durham, before teaching at Ayden-Grifton High School. Later, after her children were grown, she returned to teaching at her alma mater, J.H. Rose High School for a number of years.

In 1965, she married Walker Lee Allen, Jr., who survives. They delighted in 59 years and 49 weeks of married life together.

Betsy adored her family. Family came before everything but her love of the Lord. Truly, her family was her universe. There was nothing she would not do for them, and she always did it with a smile and a joyful heart. She could wink with either eye and she was quick to do so.

Betsy loved people. Active in her church, she taught Sunday School, was a lay leader, and governing board member. She taught Community Bible Study, led a county-wide fundraising drive for the American Heart Association, and competed at both tennis and bridge. A voracious reader, Betsy was a member of the De Novo book club.

Her parents, Hubert Herndon Bryant and Mary Frances Deeds Bryant, predeceased her.

In addition to her beloved husband, Betsy is survived by: her twins, Walker Lee Allen, III, (and wife Wendy) and Mary Helen Hutchinson (and husband David), both of Greenville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Walker Voliva (and husband Evan), William Jackson Allen, Robert Waters Allen, Emma Grace Combs, David Knox Hutchinson, Jr., Mary Elizabeth Hutchinson, and Robert Allen Hutchinson; great-granddaughters, Bryant Elizabeth Voliva and Lucy Ellis Voliva; sisters Mary Ann Bryant Oakley (and husband Godfrey) Margaret Byrant Hooks, and Katherine Bryant Ward (and husband Jim), and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Christ Hope Church,
