Graham Eubank Obituary

Graham Manly Eubank

October 10, 1936 - October 28, 2017

Johns Island, SC

Graham Manly Eubank, 81, husband of Janet Hall Eubank, entered into eternal rest, surrounded by family on Saturday, October 28, 2017.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church at 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC. Immediately following the service, there will be a reception at the Carolina Yacht Club. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Manly was born on October 10, 1936, in Henderson, NC, son of the late Reverend and Mrs. Graham Stanford Eubank. After graduating from Fayetteville High School, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wofford College in 1958. While at Wofford he was president of Kappa Alpha Order. He then served as a Lieutenant in the US Army. In 1969 he moved his family to Charleston where he founded Palmetto Ford Inc.

Manly was very active in the local community, serving on the Board of Directors of the Star Gospel Mission; Chairman and Founding Member of CresCom Bank; President of the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association; President of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce; Commodore of the Carolina Yacht Club, and Chairman of the SC Governors Cup Billfishing Series Advisory Board. He was also a longterm member of the Hibernian Society, the Charleston Club, and the Country Club of Charleston. Manly received many awards, including South Carolina Automobile Dealer of the Year and Time Magazine's Quality Dealer of the Year. Throughout his life he served the church in various capacities, most recently as an Elder at Johns Island Presbyterian Church.

Manly gave of himself often and freely. Family, friends, and coworkers all reaped the benefits of his advice and positive outlook. He never rested on past achievement, always looking forward to new ideas and ways to engage with the world around him. Though many will remember Manly as a gifted storyteller, able to draw in a large crowd with tales of days past, his most beloved time was spent relaxing on his porch swing with family, looking out over the creek.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Janet Hall Eubank; two daughters Burnam Eubank of Mt. Pleasant and Elizabeth Eubank of Lugoff, SC, and one son, Graham M. Eubank, Jr. and his wife Becky of Sullivan's Island; three sisters, Lynne Gregory of Charlotte, NC, Betty Early and her husband Doyle of High Point, NC, and Mariah Kemp and her husband Ron of Greenville, NC; two grandchildren, Terrill and Gray Eubank; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Star Gospel Mission, 474 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or The Dr. Graham S. Eubank '33 Endowed Scholarship Fund, Wofford College, Office of Advancement, 429 N Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29203.

I have just learned of the passing of Manly Eubank today. I was first hired in the Automobile Business by Manly Eubank of Palmetto Ford when it was located on Morrison Drive, Charleston. He gave me the inspiration to further my career in the Automobile Business for over 37 years. He had a kind and gentle spirit. May his family be comforted in knowing the many lives that he touched and the legacy he has left. Burnam and Graham, you have my deepest sympathy. May God comfort and bless you during this time of sorrow.

I have known Manly since 1993 thru my employer, First Extended. Manly was very kind and engaging with me and I came to really appreciate him as a wonderful person. The last ten years or so we enjoyed our annual golf outing on Fripp Island with Chuck Averett. These were special times of great storytelling, excellent seafood meals , and not so good golf.
Manly particularly enjoyed telling all the stores about the Apple Dumpling Gang .... he really enjoyed those times and loved recounting every detail like it happened yesterday.
I will miss our friendship and wish Blessings over Graham and the rest of the family as they both remember and honor this fine Man !!!

I remember the first time I met him, ions ago and he told me I would excel in this industry. I was young, bright eyed and in his words full of energy! He told me to listen to Bill (Pappas) and Colonel (John Mayer) and I would go far! I did, and I have roots because of the legacy he created. His vision on Savannah Highway.. gave me my direction and his words mean more now with his passing. Prayers to his immediate family, and his Palmetto Ford family during this difficult time.

Jan, I'm truly indebted to Manly, for several things -- but most all, for his kind, loving, and loyal support during a very dark time in my life. Manly's measured words, thoughtful insights, and peacemaking manner made a tremendous impact on me. In those days, it felt like friends were hard to come by, and Manly was one of a handful of leaders who I knew I could count on to give me prayer, support, encouragement, and sound counsel.
I am saddened because don't think I will be able to attend Manly's service since I am now in the midst of planning for a memorial service here in Gaffney. Please know that my heart and my prayers are very much with you in these days, as I give thanks for the incredible grace and kindness that Manly poured out on me as we sought to serve Jesus and Johns Island Presbyterian Church together.

Jan, May God bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you, now and forevermore. And for Manly, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master!"
