Ron Wright (1953–2021), U.S. Representative from Texas

by Linnea Crowther

Ron Wright was a Republican U.S. Representative from Texas’ 6th congressional district, in the Arlington area.

Political career

Wright began his political career in 2000 as a member of the Arlington, Texas city council. In 2004, he became Arlington’s mayor pro-tem, serving until 2008. He later served as U.S. Rep. Joe Barton’s chief of staff, and then the Tarrant County tax assessor. When Barton chose not to seek reelection in 2018 after a scandal involving explicit photos, Wright ran for his office and won, after rising to the top of a run-off election for the Republican primary. He was reelected in 2020 and served on committees including Foreign Affairs and Education and Labor. In 2019, Wright was among the Congress members who “stormed” impeachment proceedings against President Trump, entering a secure room during a closed-door deposition to protest what they called a lack of transparency. The following year, Wright was among the Representatives who signed the amicus brief in support of Texas v. Pennsylvania, contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election.
