I grew up watching Omar's on-air professionalism. He kindly visited with me when I graduated from college and began looking for a sportscasting job. I became the "voice of the Buckeyes' and will always be grateful for the journalistic integrity of Omar, Tom Hamlin at Channel 7, and Si Burick and Ritter Collett and other writers at Dayton's two newspapers. Thank you, Omar. You set the bar high for all of us who followed you. Chuck Underwood

From the days of Omar and Janice, family and friends to the days of Omar and companion Betty(we introduced them) and her family and friends, it has been a remarkable time. After Janice passed, Omar bought a condo near ours on Southdale Drive, what fun we had teaching him to wash, iron and cook(well, somewhat) had many meals with him and then he would say "tomorrow night is on me at T.I. We are so glad we went to Marco to see them a month ago, and even more happy to have called them the Saturday evening before he left us.What a hilarious conversation we had. We just returned from his weekend in Dayton and with the wonderful families and all the friends together, we can smile a bit more with pleasant thoughts. We will miss his three times a week phone calls but have wonderful memories. He was one of a kind.

The many paths taken by the folks who knew and worked with Omar all led to one path and brought us together again yesterday at the funeral. I looked at his funeral as a celebration of life, from his grandson talking of how inspiring his grandpa was to him or Kris’s thoughts on Omar’s ride to the pearly gates.

When I covered Sports with Omar I was lucky enough to meet folks like Pete Rose, Mohammed ail, Paul Brown or two old men playing horseshoes. He treated all with respect and true interest .

Going to Spring Training or the preview of the Lake Placid Olympics or any of the many stories we covered , I felt honored to be with him and he always made me feel good about whatever we were covering.

Coach, you will be greatly missed by your family, friends and co-workers. But as path of life continues on down the road I am sure we will all take wonderful memories of Omar and Janice in our hearts forever. Thanks Omar for the memories you did it your way, and what a way it was!

Your loving friends, Ron and Sandy Hicks, Centerville, OH

Our heartfelt sympathy to Betty and their families. I had just played golf with Omar the Thursday before he died. My wife, Carolyn, brother, Tony and I played golf every week when Omar moved to Florida. He always hit the ball straight!! His sense of humor was
sparkling and he was kind to everyone he met! He amplified the
word gentleman. "Thanks for being our friend, we truly miss you!"

I was fortunate enough to meet Omar as a young photographer at WKEF in 1989. I remember listening to Omar do Bengals games with Phil Samp growing up in Cincinnati. Omar was always kind and friendly to everyone and always had a great story. I always looked forward to going to Spring Training in Sarasota to have lunch with Omar at St. Armends circle. God Bless the Dean of Dayton sports.

He was what he was--and that was plenty!

I was a baby TV news director back in 1983, told I had few assets at Channel 2- but he WAS one of them. Nonetheless, I knew I could hep him be even better. He was incredibly polite in taking my advice-then going ahead and did what he thought was best. Thank goodness! Always a pro and always a gentleman. In a racquet full of egos, he really deserved one -- but never flaunted it. What a man!

You were blessed to have two very wonderful, loved and respected parents. I met Janice many, many years ago at Bear School, and again when she tutored at Bauer. Her compassion for her students and her warm smile smile made her such a special educator and person. Although I didn't know your father as well, he was always very friendly whenever our paths crossed around the 'Burg. The loss of this very public and very fine man is felt by so many others, as noted in this guest book. May your memories surround you with love and peace at this time.

It was a distinct privilege to have worked with and known Omar. He was always so friendly and interested in people and their own needs. Omar's smile was contagious and I never saw him without one, when I had the honor to anchor the news at TV-2---Omar was a true gentleman and always supportive of me and anyone he worked with. Out of the studio, he was the same man, warm and kind and always with the same smile. So long Dean, it was a pleasure to have known and worked with you. My deepest sympathy to his family.

What a loss for the Dayton community. Omar, I will miss your warm personality. You were a perfect gentleman. I put you right up there with the best such as the late Si Burick. You exhibited no bias at all, a true professional. Thanks for entertaining us and reporting sports as it should be done.

As a youngster, I first became acquainted with Omar as the announcer for the WLW-D Studio Wrestling Show.

I can vividly recall when Dick the Bruiser unexpectedly stopped the show and burst thru the curtains to the surprise of fans attendance and on TV. Omar could even "handle" Dick The Bruiser!!!!

Omar graced and supported the Bogie Busters Golf Tournament for many many years. Thank you!

May God Bless you and the Williams family.

I arrived in Dayton over 20 years ago. My family was still up in Akron where our oldest son Doug was playing his senior year of highschool football. I would leave Dayton and drive straight through to Akron to watch his games. One weekend I stayed in Dayton for some reason and caught my first Operation Football!!!!! What a great show for some one like me already a fan of high school sports. There was Omar detailing each game shown then the cheerleaders of the week followed by the band of the week. Omar made it all so family I wanted Omar to come with me to Akron so he could see my son's team play and then Omar could define the game as he did on Operation Football. There were and are others, but no one camptured the Friday night frenzie as Omar. Thank you for making some of my lonely Friday nights away from my family sustainable with your banter and excitement. God bless, Omar.

We were so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. We have so many fond memories of all of you as a family living next door to us on Fox Run. We also have the wonderful memory of our dinner club which met regularly for almost 3 years..they were really fun times. It is never easy to lose a parent no matter how old either of you are...please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. We are leaving for New York on Friday to attend a memorial service for one of Tom's brothers who died recently..or you can be assured that we would have been at Omar's services. Would love to hear from you and catch up with what is going on in all of your lives. We read the wonderful tributes to Omar and especially the one from one of his grandchildren....really beautiful...we will be thinking of all of you in the days to come. We will look forward to hearing from you sometime in the future. Best to all, Nancy and Tom Flagg

I first met Omar as secretary of the Dayto Bowling Association in the l960's. When bowlers would bowl a 300 game, I would go tothe lanes, take the bowlers picture with a Polaroid camera and go to channel 2 and get with Omar with the picture and the bowlers statistics. Omar would then have the picture and story of the bowlers accomplishments that very same night. In 1974, Omar was the Mater of Ceremonies at my installation as Vice President of the American Bowling Congress.
Omar was great person and will be greatly missed by the public as well as his family. My deepest condolences to them.

I played golf with Omar 2 times a week for 15 years along with our friends Jerry and Denny. I knew him as a friend for 25 years. Omar was the Best Man at my wedding. He was the nicest gentleman I’ve had the privilege of knowing. Kind, companionate, honest, and dedicated to his job and family, were just a few of his qualities. I have the utmost respect for Omar. Being his friend for so many years has made me, a much better person. Besides still owing him a few bucks from the golf course, I owe him my deepest appreciation and respect for knowing that “Good Guys Can Come in First”.
To Betty and Omar’s family, Janet and I extend our deepest heart felt sympathy.

I had the pleasure of working with Omar for more than a decade. In fact, our desks were always across from each other. I never heard this man raise his voice or lose control. He had a good time doing what he was doing. I know some of his secrets about spring training that will never be told. In fact, we live in Sarasota and he and Betty came up and we took him to his first sporing training game that he actually got to sit and watch. We loved him and Betty, I love you too. Will call soon.

In the early 1990's i was at a tailgate party at Ohio State and was introduced to Omar. I was very nervous at first but as time went by he made me feel so relaxed. We sat and talked for about an hour. He told some fabulous stories about Woody Hayes, Pete Rose and Sparky Anderson. To this day in our family we remark about the day we met Omar and what a total gentleman he was. Rest in peace Mr Williams

Omar was a good man. A chance to speak with him made the day brighter and worthy of a smile. Although those of us at the other stations may not have been much real competition, he always treated us with respect and affection that made us feel welcome and accepted by a man who set the standard in Dayton. He was the best.

I never knew Mr. Williams personally but I grew up in Springfield, Ohio just outside of Dayton and always watched WDTN sports just to see Mr. Williams. I could just see it in him on television that he really really loved what he did and was just a very very caring & loving person. He was definitely an icon and will be missed by all. I moved to Cincinnati and met my wife after high school , she is now a teacher in the same district as Mr. Williams son, Scott. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family in this time of your life.

God bless "The Dean." Fortunate are all of us whose lives he touched. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Omar at WDTN. I will forever remember our frantic Friday night high school football coverage. Just as the influx of highlights and scores reached their most hectic level, "The Dean" might first show some concern- then he'd smile and laugh: he was immersed in a world he loved. I will always remember and appreciate his passion.
My best to the Williams family.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Omar's passing. He was truly one-of-a-kind.

I had the distinct honor to work with him for over a decade at WDTN. I was constantly amazed that when I produced newscasts I could tell him, "O, need you to fill 3:20 tonight," and darned if he didn't hit the time to the second, seamlessly ad-libbing or trimming as needed.

I'll treasure the time spent chatting with him, much of the time after-hours at his basement bar.

He will be missed... and very fondly remembered... by everyone who ever worked with him.

If you grew up in Dayton ... everyone knew who Omar was. I am proud to say that Omar was my friend. Omar and I met when I was at Alter High School. The way he treated me as a high school football player was incredible. In later years Omar would stop in Urbans and tell great sports stories to his many fans.
Omar put everyone on a level field . He made everyone feel special.
My wife, Susan and I had the honor of having Omar, his daughter Sally and his son-in-law Kris visit our home in Phoenix. Same great stories, same gentleman, same big heart!!! I'm sure you will be having a "cold one" with Urban in a better place soon. God bless you and your family Omar.

My prayers are with the Williams family. I grew up in Miamisburg and watched Omar on channel 2 until I moved to Florda in 1973. Many times I've asked why can't we have more newscasters like Omar Williams? Sally was in my sister Patti's Class at MHS. Scott was my sister Kathy's age. His late wife Janice substituted for several weeks in my 6th grade class at Bear School and taught us French. She was also a wonderful person. I never forgot her. Two wonderful people. They are together.

I was at first shocked and then saddened to hear of the loss of and old friend. I had the pleasure of knowing Omar personally. I was lucky enough to have worked with him at WLW-D in the 1970's. I was in the sales department, and as with any close knit group of people we would exchannge many and various stories, jokes and comments. I left Dayton but would occasionally contact him during visits back home.
In the last few years I had the pleasure of playing golf with Omar and on one occasion he was kind enough to autograph his book for me.
Just last year about this time a mutual friend of his was visiting and we suprised Omar with a phone call which was great pleasure for all 3 of us. If I may pass along anything of value to anyone who may read this; it is this. A few months after the afore mentioned phone call, I called Omar and we talked about getting together for a visit, game of golf, or just rehashing some memories. We agreed to call each other in the near future but some how we never got around to it. I thought many times "I've got to call Omar" but to my great sorrow now, I didn't make the call. If you have been putting off a call like that.....Do it now!!!
Our deepest smypathies to Betty and all the Williams Family.

Omar was a friend, a professional broadcaster, and certainly a rock of our community. The sports and broadcasting worlds have lost a wonderful ambassador and true professional, and the rest of us have lost a wonderful friend. In 1959 I was in the 5th grade and visited the Piqua armory where many wrestlers from the TV2 weekly wrestling matches performed. Omar was the announcer sometimes and ALWAYS had time to talk to us kids. He never brushed us off and we truly appreciated this TV personality giving his time to talk to us kids.

May 5, 2008

I grew up watching Omar and aspired to be a television sportscaster. I was honored when I was awarded the Omar Williams Award for the outstanding senior broadcasting student at the University of Dayton especially with Omar presenting the award. I was able to spend some time with him that evening and I walked away in awe of his kindness. I crossed paths again with Omar when he graciously agreed to be the honorary chair of a golf outing that I ran for the Boy Scouts. I remember having such a great time listening to his stories as we played the course. He is truly a legend in sportscasting and the Dayton area was privileged to have him for so long.

The word "legend" is over-used, especially in sports.

But there's no other word to describe Omar.

A true gentleman, and besides being a legend, a truly good man.

How great to read all the wonderful memories from people who knew Omar in Dayton. We didn't meet Omar until about ten years ago in Marco Island. I guess it won't surprise any of you folks from Dayton to know that he was still a gentleman and a "class act". We treasured our time with Omar and loved hearing his stories. He gave us an autographed copy of his book, which we will forever treasure. One of the stories we share with all our friends is our goal to play "Omar" golf. Omar had this short easy little backswing and follow through -- but every ball went straight down the fairway. We will miss our times on the golf course and in the 19th hole with our friend, Omar. He was so special !!!

I'm sorry to learn of Omar's death. He and my father Ed worked together at Channel 2 for many good years, and he was a fine man and sportscaster.

Charley Hall

May 5, 2008

While Omar was always very enthusiastic about sports, he was still very objective and a true reporter, looking at the stories he reported from all sides. My fondest memories of Omar will be from "Studio Wrestling" on Saturday nights and watching it with my grandmother, who went to her grave thinking it was real. I will always remember the time he was presenting a trophy to one of the "good guys" when one of the villians interupted the presentation and broke the trophy over the good guys head. Omar will truly be missed.

I first met Omar when I became his weekend Sports Anchor in March 1976. I worked for two years in that spot as a part-timer while teaching in the Kettering schools. Omar was more than willing to help a fledgling sportscaster in those early days. He was one of the nicest guys I ever met in the business. He will be missed greatly. My sincere sympathy goes out to his family, including Kris Long, with whom I also worked at WDTN TV2. May Omar rest in peace.

Growing up in Dayton, graduating from Northridge H.S. in 1950, and then graduating Wittenberg in 1955, I looked forward to and enjoyed Omar's sports reporting and stories.  Little did I know I would get to know him via my sister, Betty Kimble, and share many fond sports stories with him these past nine years.  Omar will be greatly missed and reverently remembered.

Omar Williams was simply the best. I grew up in Springfield in the '50s listening to his sports reports. He always reported the sports accurately and with style. Go in peace.

Growing up in Dayton in the 1950s, whenever I hear and see a sports announcer on local TV news, I always compare the person to Omar Williams. Always will. He was the best!

As an avid UD basketball fan, eager to get the complete UD basketball roster. I would call Omar after a news broadcast for a detailed bio of the team. Omar would patiently give me heights, numbers, background and information, even detail if the player was right or left handed.....I did this every year from the time I was 6 to about 14. He answered every question and I would write down every detail "without EVER saying he had to go". I never met Omar in person but admired his kindness and patience to this now 48 year old.....I'll never forget "THE DEAN"!
