Clinton WARNER Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

WARNER, Clinton, Jr. CLINTON E. WARNER JR., M.D. Dr. Clinton Ellsworth Warner, born in Atlanta, GA., on the campus of Morehouse College on July 11, 1924. Warner was the son of beloved Morehouse instructor Clinton E. (Pop) Warner Sr. and Mabel Hubert Warner in historic Graves Hall on July 11, 1924. Warner was an activist and catalyst on the front lines of three of the twentieth century's most transformative struggles World War II (Invasion of Omaha Beach - D-Day) the Civil Rights Movement and the founding of the Morehouse School of Medicine, the first medical school to be established at a Historically Black College and University in the 20th century. Graduating in 1940 from East Depot High School in LaGrange, GA, Warner entered Morehouse in the Fall of 1940 at the age of 16. Always identifying with the distinguished Morehouse class of 1944, Warner's post-secondary education was interrupted by the onset of World War II. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army and participated in the D-Day invasion of France (Omaha Beach) that turned the tide of the war in Europe. Warner then returned home to study at Morehouse College, where he received his B.S. degree in Biology in 1948. He earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, graduating summa cum laude in 1951. Following an internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and surgical training in St. Louis, Warner entered private practice in 1956 and retired in Atlanta in 1997 as a surgeon. From 1959-1995, Warner would also serve as College Physician and Director of the McVicar Infirmary on the campus of Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. Warner also became heavily involved in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. He purchased a home at 483 Fielding Lane in Southwest Atlanta, defying tthe Berlin Wall-like Peyton Road Barricades erected in 1962 by Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. to segregate the community. Warner's act of resistance initiated a campaign for fair housing that opened housing in Southwest Atlanta to African Americans. Warner was also a plaintiff in a 1963 lawsuit that desegregated Emory University and the Fulton County Medical and Dental Society. As the civil rights movement gained momentum, Warner contributed medical and bail resources to student activists and was jailed twice in hotel protests in Atlanta. In 1967, he founded the first minority medical surgical group, the Atlanta Surgical Professional Association. In 1973, he was elected to the Morehouse College Board of Trustees where he served on five (5) committees during his 30-year tenure. An active member of several medical and civic organizations, Warner has been recognized several times for his contributions to medicine and the community. He served as honorary co-chairman of the Medical Support Group for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and served on the board of trustees of Morehouse College for 30 years and as Founding Chair of the Morehouse Medical School from 1979-2004. He was a Lifetime member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Among his many hobbies and interests were Golf, classical piano, bridge, computers and chess. Warner received numerous Honors and Awards for his leadership and philanthropy as a treasured member of the Greater Atlanta communities. He leaves to cherish his precious and fond memories, a devoted and loving wife, Sally Johnson Warner; son, Clinton E. Warner, III; granddaughter, Monique Warner, niece, Shauna Smith and a host of other relatives, friends and patients whom he served in the Atlanta community for more than 50 years. Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, July 6th, 2012 at 11:00AM at The Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and Music Academic Building on the campus of Morehouse College 900 West End Avenue S.W., Atlanta, GA 30314, The Rev. To the Warner family,

God bless you during this time of bereavement. I worked as a file clerk for Dr. Warner during my junior and senior year at Fredrick Dougass high school. Dr. Warner was one of the kindest person I've ever known. I really appreciated the opportunity he gave me to work at his office to earn money to help with graduation expenses.

When I moved to Atlanta in 1981, Clinton was one of the early Black physicians who had already made his mark and he continued to do so. He served as a role model for us then up-and-coming physicians. His legacy is sound.

He was funny, playful, called it like he saw it, and was very committed to the community.

My prayers are with his family at this time of loss. Take your rest, Clint. Job well done.

Clint became one of my favorite cousins. Part of my heart went with him when I learned of his passing yesterday morning. Truly, a great visionary, a brilliant mind, a loyal family member has moved on to a higher place. Atlanta will miss him as well as those of us who were close to him. I am still learning of all of the things he did to bring about the present-day Atlanta, through his efforts during the Civil Rights movement and beyond. His service to his beloved Morehouse College and the Morehouse School of Medicine was exemplary. I am grateful fo all of the many pleasant times we spent together. Rest well, my dear cousin. Job more than well done.

Romans 8:38-39 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
