RAY THOMPSON Obituary

RAY THOMPSON Ray, a journalist, was a true pioneer of TV news in Arizona. He was the first anchorman at KTVK, Channel 3 and the first news director/anchorman at KTAR, now KPNX, Channel 12, both of Phoenix. Later, Ray was promoted to Vice President of News at Channel 12. A member of the Arizona Broadcaster's Association, "Hall of fame", he was awarded six Emmy's for achievement in news and documentaries while at KPNX, Channel 12. He was a member of both the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences "Silver and Gold Circle Clubs" in recognition of fifty years contribution to the development of TV news. A founder and charter member of the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists…Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, Ray also served a term as a president. He also served as a founding member of the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He was awarded the Arizona Press Club "Distinguished Service Award" in 1981. Ray also authored two books, "And Finally" dealing with his broadcast recollections and humorous stories used at the end of his newscasts, and "Cactus Corners, Arizona" a humorous journey through a fictional Arizona town as a young radio newsman, in which he relates his experiences with colorful townsfolk and fellow broadcasters. He served several years as a member of the editorial advisory board of Phoenix Magazine and was a contributor of articles to that magazine. In 1976, he served on the seven member City of Phoenix Bicentennial Committee. Later, he served as a member of the Board of "Friends of Arizona State University Libraries." Ray started his career in Minnesota as a newspaper reporter. His first job was for a chain of weekly papers. After serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, Ray sought a job in radio. Ray discovered the only opening was in engineering so he took a correspondence course and gained a first class broadcast engineer's license. He, then, found employment at KROC in Rochester as an engineer. Before long the station, recognizing his journalistic ability, named him KROC's sportscaster and later news director. When KROC-TV went on the air in 1963 he became News Director and Anchorman. He also served as a stringer correspondent for the United Press and Newsweek Magazine and served as a president of the Northwest Radio News Association, a seven state organization with headquarters at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. After retirement from TV, Ray served as Executive Producer of Samcor Video, a unit of the then...Good Samaritan Hospital Association. He also did freelance work as a writer-producer of monthly videos for Arizona Bank, Security Pacific and First Interstate Bank. In 1986, he produced a video magazine for Arizona Bank which was awarded, "Best National Corporate Video" in Public Relations Society of America competition. During the same period he broadcast a daily program "This Day in Arizona History" on Radio Station KTAR. Ray was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, November 1, 1921, to Harald and Bertha Thompson. His Loving and devoted family includes Phebe, his wife of 60 years, children, Dr. Joel Thompson, Diane Braddy, Randolph Thompson, Melody Sadler, and Michele Meyer. He had 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Ray was a very private person. His wishes were for a small family celebration of his life. His family was his life.

Memories and Condolences
for RAY THOMPSON

Not sure what to say?

June 27, 2012

Dear Phoebe, I was so saddened to hear of Ray's passing recently. What a fine gentleman he was to work with at Channel 12. Ray taught this print journalist from the AZ Republic a lot about broadcast journalism. I didn't recall that he was from Minnesota, also. I am so sorry for you and your family that this gracious and kind man is gone. I remember one incident late in the afternoon when we were preparing for the 6 o'clock news when suddenly a group of firefighters came rushing into the newsroom. I can't recall what the emergency was now, but while the rest of the staff was ushered out, there was Ray just as calm as could be! The last time I saw both of you was at Howie Shepard's funeral. He was the first news photographer I worked with and he also helped me those first few months with my stories. I hope you are well. Please know that so many people admired and respected Ray. With my deepest condolences to you and your family. And always with fond memories of Ray. Cheryl Rexford (602) 954-4078

My husband and I enjoyed watching Ray on the news, both Channel 3 and Channel 12. I remember Ray always saying after Dewey Hopper did the weather and commented about a 10% chance of precipitation, Ray would always come back with "it's those 10%ers that will get you every time". So sad to hear of his passing. God Bless Ray and his family, wife Phebe, children, grandchildren and greatgranchdildren. You have many many great memories of Ray to cherish. Ray was "the news source" during the 8+ years I worked at Channel 12 from 1967 to 1975. To me Ray was exactly what a news anchor should be and no one ever changed my mind in all the ensuing years. I've missed him on the news but I am glad I got to work with him. Phebe, the world is a sadder place now. My heartfelt condolences.

Ray and I worked on several radio spots when I was ad director for the old Russ Lyon Realty Co. He was a true professional with impeccable timing. A 30-second spot was delivered in thirty seconds, in one take. He had no notes and easily fit each commercial into its allotted time. Ray was a gentle man who earned the respect of his associates and the trust of his audience.

We moved to Phoenix in 1966 and Ray immediately became our favorite news source. His professionalism and friendly presentation created an instant trust in what he was saying. Strangely enough, I was thinking of him last week and wondering how he was. He'll be missed by many of my age, who like to say, "they don't make them like that anymore." In his case, it's true.
Wishing peace to his family...

Ray was indeed the Walter Cronkite of Arizona and missed so much when he retired from being in front of the camera. He was First Class all the way and no matter what the situation he was reporting on, he maintained a special dignity and grace about him always with his wonderful voice and humor when it was appropriate. He never sensationalized the news but spoke from his heart as if all the world watching were part of his family.

Most sincere thanks for sharing this wonderful man with all of us all those years. Blessings to you all now at this most difficult time.

JKristen,
Phoenix

I am quite honored and feel fortunate that such an Arizona broadcast news icon was also my colleague at KTVK. Ray was always kind to me, and I will long remember him as a great gentleman, the quintessential professional and a calming presence. - To Phebe and the rest of Ray's family and friends, may you be comforted by your dearest memories as you reflect on what Ray meant to each of you. May peace be yours today and in the days to come...
With deepest sympathy,

What great memories I have of growing up in Phx. and Ray Thompson always on the news. Mom & dad never watched anyone else. If Ray said it, it was rote. He was our local Walter Cronkite. Always believable, honest & sincere. Thank you to his family for sharing him with all of us for all these years!
My sincere condolences.

I was honored to be a longtime, devoted friend of Ray and Phebe's. I will miss him always.
