Daryl Seaman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 13 to Jan. 16, 2009.
SEAMAN _ Daryl Kenneth (Doc) April 28, 1922 - January 11, 2009 Doc Seaman passed away Sunday, January 11, 2009 at the age of 86 years, after a long battle with prostate cancer, a challenge that typically inspired him to donate his time, effort and financial support in order to help others with the disease. Doc was born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan. He became one of Alberta's most successful oilmen and industrialists through his company, Bow Valley Industries, and many other ventures. He and his brothers, B.J. and Don Seaman, were among the first wave of adventurous oilmen who pioneered the industry after the Second World War. Doc's war record was itself remarkable; he flew eighty-two successful combat missions out of North Africa as a sub-hunting pilot and was awarded the Government of France citation for bravery. Doc was an original Calgary Flames owner who followed the team passionately to the end. Besides bringing the Flames to Calgary, he was a key player in building the Saddledome and the acquisition for Calgary of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games. Doc was also one of a small group of visionaries who created programs that saved Canadian hockey from mediocrity at a time when the European game was becoming dominant. Canada's five junior hockey gold medal wins in a row have their roots in Project 75, now called the Seaman-Hotchkiss Hockey Foundation. Until recently, Doc could be seen lacing on his skates for a powerful turn around Olympic Plaza. Doc was perhaps proudest of creating jobs for thousands of Canadians; the pain of unemployment haunted him from the time he saw the miserable parade of jobless men riding the rails across prairies during the Great Depression. Most recently, Doc was involved in a job creation program with aboriginal partnerships through Western Lakota Drilling. His business goal was to create jobs; money was merely a fortunate by-product, especially for the beneficiaries of his many philanthropic causes. Doc gave generously to the Seaman-Hotchkiss Foundation, the Seaman Family MR Research Centre, the Calgary Prostate Cancer Institute, Hockey Canada, the University of Calgary's NeuroArm project, Seaman Stadium - Okotoks, Scott Seaman Sports Rinks, SALTS, Ducks Unlimited, University of Saskatchewan, Nature Conservancy of Canada and a host of other social and cultural causes too numerous to list. His love of the outdoors and ranching inspired Doc to purchase the OH Ranch in 1987. It became Doc's desire to preserve the OH legacy for future generations. Through a partnership with the Alberta government and private conservation groups, it was agreed to preserve a total of twenty-one square kilometers through a heritage rangeland designation and conservation easements for one of Alberta's oldest and largest ranches. Doc's many honours include: Officer of the Order of Canada; member of the Alberta Order of Excellence; and was inducted into the Calgary Business Hall of Fame. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from both the University of Calgary and the University of Saskatchewan, where Doc earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. In later life, Doc's motto became "never retire". He urged everyone to stay active and devote their time to helping others. This was expressed by Doc in his recent biography "Staying in the Game". Former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed wrote of him: "For decades he has also worked outside the business sphere, using his remarkable talents to better his community and his country. Yet he has done this so quietly that his name is relatively unknown to the general public." Doc would be uncomfortable with the length of this obituary. He never looked for praise, preferring to act rather than talk. We felt it important to share some of his accomplishments with the hope of celebrating his life and encouraging others to carry on his legacy of community service. Special thanks to the Foothills ICU Medical Team, especially the excellent daily care from all the nurses and doctors. Doc was predeceased by his wife Lois, his sister Dorothy Hamilton, his father Byron Luther, his mother, Letha Mae (Mae), his sister-in-law and wife of B.J., Evelyn, and his beloved grandson, Scott Seaman. Doc leaves to mourn, his fiancee, Monique Viau, daughter Diane Lefroy; and his sons, Bob Seaman and his fiancee Patricia Calvert, Gary and Val Seaman, and Ken and Roberta Seaman; as well as his daughter-in-law Shannon Seaman. He also leaves his grandchildren, Kelly and fiance Jared Hockley, Oliver, Jarrod, Jessica, Kenneth, Cory and wife Nancy, Jeffrey as well as great-grandchild Isiah. Doc will also be greatly missed by his brothers Byron James (B.J.) and family, Donald, wife Eleanor and family. Funeral Services will be held at First Alliance Church (12345 - 40 Street S.E.) today, January 16, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be directed to the Seaman Family Septic Shock Research Fund by cheque or on-line at The Calgary Foundation, Suite 700, 999 - 8 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2R 1J5 ( www.thecalgaryfoundation.org ). In living memory of Doc Seaman, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: 403-243-8200.

I'm not surprised that Doc meant so much to so many people. My father, John Buhr, worked for Bow Valley Industries many years ago. He did not work for the company for very long but he kept in touch with his "boss", Doc. They shared a passion for hockey. When the Flames came to Calgary my father was over the moon. He became a proud season ticket holder and Doc helped him get some of the best seats in the house. When my Dad became ill and could not manage the stairs to his seat, Doc offered him a box seat for a game at the Saddle Dome. I was fortunate to attend that game with my Dad and it was quite the experience. Dad died shortly after and Doc attended the funeral. On behalf of my Dad and myself, I would like to offer my sympathy to the Seaman family.
I am impressed by Doc's compassion, his philanthropy, and his humility. Doc is a great role model for all of us.
With sincere sympathy,
Joan Buhr

To Monique and the Seaman family. Like most families in Alberta, ours has been touched by the silent generosity of Doc. Our enjoyment of baseball, hockey, university sports, and the beauty of Alberta's wildlife and landscape has been greatly enhanced by Doc's efforts and his contributions to cancer treatment and medical technology will also benefit us in the future. We wish to express our sincere gratitude to Doc and our sympathy to Monique and the family.

I'm very sorry to hear of Doc's death. I first met him in the 1970s. He had a photo in his office that I admired--"High Noon in the Business District of Rouleau". Soon thereafter he hired us (Goldman Sachs) to do one of the first private placements of debt secured by petroleum reserves for Bow Valley Industries. We joined up again in 1989 as two of the first directors of Potash Corp where he was the authoritative voice whenever a really tough decision had to be made. I watched with admiration later as he took a leading role in the UofS's first capital campaign. He was a lovely, quiet, effective man, and not too bad a golfer.
Best wishes to your family,

Although my dad worked for Mr. Seaman in the oil industry I did not meet him until I was 14. I had spent that summer and a few summers after as a summer student at his place in Millarville. When I was 15 he acquired the OH Ranch and I will never forget how excited he was to explore and perserve it's history, and ride it's vast and beautiful trails on then horse Smoke.
One of the many things I learned from Mr. Seaman was how important it is to keep our heritage alive and perseve the awesome beauty of Alberta. I look forward to seeing one of his many legacies of conservation live on in the Millarville, Longview and Southern Alberta area not only for my children, but their children to come.
Thank-you Mr. Seaman and may you and Smoke enjoy the many trails to ride in the skys above.

My condolences to the Seaman Family

Never meet Doc, we had season tickets for the Flames Games for years. We also are in the Oil Patch--we loved to hear stories about him --we come from High River and travelled the back country often. He left a legacy! Such a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, & neighbor, friend to all!! You should all be so very proud to have known such a man, I wish I had.

First time I met Doc was when He/Bow Valley Industries bought out Ocelot in 93/94/Hatton Saskatchewan. He loved to hunt so I had said something to Ron Salt about taking Doc out goose hunting. It wasn't very long after that Ron phoned and we set up a hunt. After a few days of hunting/the next year also, I couldn't believe how Doc enjoyed himself and how nothing seemed to bother him. He was always happy, willing to help with anything and really enjoyed the breakfast time. Doc then had us back for a hockey game in the box with BJ and the gang. He never took just a couple of us, he said bring your wives, foreman at that time. That wasn't it, he took us out on the town and showed us a very good time. You could see in Doc how giving he was and loved to be around people talking and having a good time. He then took my son which was 13 years later into the dressing room to meet the Calgary Flames team/ he was as happy as my son when he saw Josh's face light up. My wife and I were very glad we met such a good man. Doc had something about him that you enjoyed his company and loved to hang with him, no matter the age. We would like to send our condolences to Doc's family and we are sure that you will all keep his memory alive by passing it on to future generations because Doc was one special man from the memories he gave us.

With our Sympathy
Brad, Arlene and Josh Miller/Richmound Sask.

So sorry to hear of Doc's passing.

I was an employee of Bow Valley Industries for 24 years.

During some of that time we had a pick-up hockey league and Doc and I played together many times over a 7 or 8 year span.

It was always a pleasure to be in his company.

Kenny, Gary and Bob,

Memories came flooding back of our youth -- the rides through Mount Royal, down to the Club, and growing up under our parent's directions. Your father, like mine, was a great influence to all of us -- and succeeded in passing his intelligence and his dilegence on to us. We all grew up under their shadows, and are better people because of their insight.

Kenny, you are in my thoughts, because of all the things we did together growing up. You lose touch with childhood friends, but they are never forgetten.

Losing a parent is one of the most difficult challenges we face, especially when they have such an impact on our lives. They were proud of us, and did their best, even when they were disappointee in us, for doing something stupid.

My condolences and thoughts are with the entire Seaman Family. Your dad was a leader, who accomplished more in his lifetime than most, who has left a lasting legacy for all who knew him.

But, Kenny, Bob and Gary, his real legacy lives on in you -- the boys he was proud of. Let me know if there is anything I can do, other than offer my condolences.
