Dear Emery family,
I was glad to receive my one year reminder from Legacy, because it gives me another chance to post some thoughts about David. A year ago, when I learned that he had passed away, I think I was so shocked that I hardly knew what to say. The fact that I hadn’t seen or been in contact with David since basically high school also made me feel that maybe I didn’t have the right to say much, even though there is so much to say about him as a person. My high school memories of David are that he was one of the kindest, most intelligent, most athletic, most respectful, most handsome :) men on the planet. Anyone who knew him knew that he was a person that would go far in this world. As an impressionable high school girl, it was wonderful to know a quality young man of his caliber. His example of gentle strength combined with a drive to be outstanding at everything he set out to do will never be forgotten. We need more people like David Emery around us to set an example for our young men today. Even though his and my paths never crossed again over the past 40 years, I really miss knowing he is in this world. However, I know heaven is benefiting from his great personality, his quick smile, his loud laugh, and his big sense of humor! Thank you for allowing me a moment to express these thoughts to you, Mrs. Emery, Angie, Ann and Ron, and Doug. I still pray for your family, and I trust that God will continue to comfort you as you hold your David close in sweet memory. Love to you all.

David - you will forever be in our hearts. As next-door neighbors for so many years, we grew up together, and we have so many fond memories of you. You were kind, caring, funny, competitive, smart, and a bright light for this world. You had so many gifts and you always made the best of them.
Our hearts and prayers are with your family.
Love always,
The McKernans (Katie, Tom, Jane, Graham, and Dan)

I have wonderful memories of my childhood neighborhood - Plum Nearly, Hunter, Brook Forest, and Wonderwood. David was sort of a quiet hero. He commanded respect without even really realizing it. The whole family lived by high standards and I am proud to know them all. My heart goes out to you.

My dear, precious brother Dave was such a beautiful joy in my life. Dave and I grew up sharing an extremely loving, kind, supportive brother-sister bond. I was always so proud of David and life was immensely happy growing up together! David was one of my very best friends. As children, we couldn't wait to play capture the flag with the McKernans or go swimming every Friday night at the YMCA with the Porter family. We had many glorious memories growing up together. I loved cheering on David every baseball season. I was thrilled when Dad let me be the team's scorekeeper, recording hits and runs in the manual score book for years. I was so proud of David and loved having him with me everywhere we went. Some of my favorite memories were the years Dave and I spent as Tar Heels together at UNC. When I married and moved to New England, Dave would join us there for weeks at a time to play with his niece and nephew who adored him. He was the best uncle ever! Now, David's own beautiful family has experienced a horrifying loss of the man we all loved. My heart absolutely aches for Angie, Mariel, Meredith and Chal. Dave loved his family deeply and cherished every minute with them. David was a warrior in his battle and his courageous strength was inspirational. We shall love and miss him every day.

Growing up in our wonderful neighborhood was all the better because David was growing up there, too. He was one of my favorite people. Wishing you a peaceful heart.

Dave's life has made a huge impact on many. Admirably smart, funny, so likeable, and a great friend, Dave will live on as an inspiration to live life to the fullest. Angie, Mariel, Meredith, and Chal I would be honored to live beside you as you navigate this new journey, offering a shoulder, a hug, a distraction, or a laugh when you need it. Peace be with you.

I met Dave in 2005 when he came to the City as the Investment Manager. From 2008 until his retirement I was his supervisor, colleague and friend.
Dave had an incredible work ethic, always meticulous and committed to doing the best job possible. He enjoyed public service and as a native Charlottean, he took pride in his contribution to the City and citizens of Charlotte. During the great recession he carefully managed the City's investments in the worse market of the last 80 years.
My memories of Dave will include his wry sense of humor, quick wit and kind heart. Dave loved sports and spending time with his family. He was always proud of his wife and kids. Some people might see Dave as a workaholic, and he did work a lot, but his family always came first.
Dave's office was next to mine and if I was talking about something that interested him, he'd hear me and show up at my door. Sometimes we'd just talk through the wall. I miss the late afternoons when Dave and I were the only ones left in the office and we would take a few minutes to just talk about the days events.
I am deeply saddened by Dave's passing. I will miss him and always remember him.
