Mr. D! My best teacher EVER. He made our high school biology class interesting and FUN, and reinforced my desire to major in natural resources management (I went on to get a degree in forestry, and I retired 13 years ago from my dream career in the US Forest Service). Rest in Peace, Mr. D.

My deepest condolences to Emma and all of the D'Ostillio family for your loss. Mr. D was the most important teacher I had. His love of nature matched his love of understanding nature. And he shared both freely. His compassion for students and love for sharing learning reached manifested in many ways. From the art he casually created on the blackboard while he lectured to his Hawk Mountain camping trips, unique and precious gifts to the many students and parents he involved. Especially important to me, he came from the same kind of working class background I did, and not just navigated the scientific and academic world, but showed how to teach and lead in that world. To him I say, thank you so much for the help and respect you gave me. I hope I've passed some of it along in my life. Thank you so much and goodbye.

Dear John, David, Jane and your families,

My deepest sympathy to you for your loss. I remember your Dad (and Mom) when we were in high school. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Masuk sports, and other school events. Ironically, he passed away on the same day as my Mother Mary...May 27, 2012. May they both rest in peace!

To the D'Ostilio's: I graduated from THS in 1974. I took a summer school course in Marine and Field Biology from Mr. D'Ostilio (probably) in 1970. I still recall the bus trips he took us on that summer and the lessons he taught. He was an exemplary teacher. Mrs. D'Ostilio was my kindergarden teacher in Monroe, and on a visit to THS in 1973 or 74, I she walked into the AV office looking for Mr. D'Ostilio's class and asked directions of me. She actually remembered me from 12 years before. It is my turn to return the favor, as I remember both Mr. & Mrs. D'Ostilio with great fondness. My sincere condolences to you all.

To the D'Ostilio Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time. I will always treasure the memories I have of being your neighbor. Mr. D teaching me how to drive, the pig pickins', the trip to Hawk Mountain my senior year, etc. I will miss and treasure always the beautiful hand illustrated Christmas cards. He was a wonderful and great person.
God Bless y'all,

Dear Emma,
Though I've been a continent away for four decades, I have held Dom in my heart as a steady, shining light throughout my high school years and beyond. His passion for the wonder of the natural world and his art; his infectious enthusiasm and encouragement of his students, whatever their interests; his sheer joy at being alive and connected to all the life around him, be it human or other have remained for me a beacon of inspiration and a model for how to live a fully realized life of love, celebration and gratitude.
My deepest sympathy for all of you, whom he touched -- and loved -- most deeply.

Angie and Family,
Please know heartfelt thoughts and empathy are coming to you from Wisconsin's Northwoods. Even though inevitable, loss is NEVER easy. So very hard. There is something within, however, that will assure us, if we can stop and listen, that this is not all there is. There is so much more. So much more . . . . .
Love to you all,
Carol
