Gregory Bruce Russell, age 70, passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 20, 2017. He was born on March 5, 1947 in Wheeling, W.V. He attended San Francisco State University, earning two Bachelor of Arts degrees in music and psychology. He continued university studies in Environmental Science at University of California, Berkeley. In his later career with the United States Postal Service he was Manager of Safety and Health for the San Francisco District then the Environmental Compliance Specialist for the Pacific Area. Greg was the devoted husband of Anne Cunnyngham Russell. He enjoyed studying and performing on the piano and trumpet. He was the first trumpet in the St. Paul's Episcopal and St. Matthew Lutheran Brass Ensembles. He was the leader of the Deeper Devotion Bible Study and a member of the Care Ministries at St. Matthew Lutheran. Greg was a connecting and caring person who was always interested in the welfare of others. Other interests included cooking gourmet meals for family and friends, traveling with Anne and managing a large garden. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne Cunnyngham Russell, his parents, Col. Ruhl and Arleen Russell, brothers Ron Russell (Linda) of Concord, CA, Doug Russell (Lucy) of American Canyon, CA, Robert Moore of Cibola, AZ, sister Sharon Moore-O'Neil of Santa Rosa, sister-in-law, Catherine Cunnyngham Jordeth of Scottsdale, AZ, brother-in-law, Vic Jordeth of Scottsdale, AZ, nieces Pauline Russell of Newark, CA, Shelly Russell of Concord, CA, Yvonne (Sean) Meyers of Cassel, CA, Jennifer Russell of Newark, CA, Kristin Jordeth of Scottsdale, AZ, Lindsay Jordeth Martin (Jordan) of Laguna Beach, CA, nephews, Brent Russell of Concord, CA, Jacob Monico-Moore of Santa Rosa, grand-niece and nephew, Janice and Bryan Meyers of Cassel, CA, and grand-nephew, Owen Martin of Laguna Beach, CA.
A memorial service will be held on August 6, 2017 at 2 P.M. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 399 Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek, CA 94598
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Food Bank of Contra Costa, St. Matthew Lutheran Church and Compassion International.

I am honored to have known Greg as the leader of the Deeper Devotional Group at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He was an amazing leader, and an impressive servant of our Lord and savior. May he rest peacefully, and may the memories of this amazing man comfort those who mourn his loss. He will be sorely missed.

Greg was a blessing to me and my family from the moment he appeared at the bedside of my ailing father in 2014 as a member of St. Matthew's Care ministry. He and my Dad struck up a friendship during that time that endured until my father's death in 2016. My mother, nieces and nephew all enjoyed Greg's humor, kindness and spirituality. He made a huge difference in our lives during a trying time. I am deeply saddened by his passing and my heart goes out to Anne and all of his friends and family during this time of loss.

Greg was one of the best of the best. His faith was inspirational and his musicianship was impeccable. I enjoyed working with him on musical projects at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church...he always brought his 'A game' and consequently lifted the playing and singing level of everyone around him. Love to Anne and all who will miss him.
